Onar Cranny, a 26-year-old U.S. citizen, came to London to train. She bought a Trek Madone bicycle for £5,000 with money left to her by her grandfather.

On Saturday morning, Onar and her friend Patrick were sitting at a table at Bartons coffee shop, finishing their coffee and getting ready to head out. Two men in black pulled up on a motorcycle and tried to take the bike.

Patrick stood in their way—then one of them pulled out a knife. Patrick raised his hands. The robber calmly slung the bike over his shoulder, got on the motorcycle, and rode off.

They called the police at 10:55 a.m. About 35 minutes later, a police van with several officers pulled up to the coffee shop. Onar and Patrick were relieved—they thought they’d come to investigate.

But the officers just came in for coffee. When 71-year-old coffee shop owner Steve Bassi asked if they would be handling the theft, they replied, “Oh, I’m sure someone will be here soon.”

The officers drank their coffee and left. A specialized unit didn’t arrive until over an hour later.
