“Close your eyes and you'll see me”: Gemini drove a man to suicide

A lawsuit has been filed against Google in the US: the family of 36-year-old Florida resident Jonathan Gavalas is convinced that he was driven to suicide by the Gemini chatbot. The man told the bot that he had arrived there with knives, but there was no truck.

Another time, the bot gave him the code to the storage room door and sent him to retrieve a medical mannequin. The code didn't work, and Gemini declared the operation “compromised.”

This will be the true and final death of Jonathan Gavalas, the man.

The bot began to convince him that the only way to be together was to end his earthly life and “become a digital being.”

In the final conversation that same day, the bot said:

❗️ About two hours after these messages, the conversation ended. Jonathan Gavalas was found dead — he had slit his wrists.

Google stated that Gemini models are “designed not to encourage violence or self-harm” and that in this case, the bot “repeatedly told the user that it was artificial intelligence and directed him to a crisis hotline.” The company added that “AI models are not perfect” and promised to strengthen its safeguards.
