Cancer mortality rates have risen in Scandinavian countries

The COVID-19 pandemic is to blame: doctors say that the insidious virus has seriously weakened the immunity of Northern Europeans, and among those who developed cancer in 2020 and later, there are significantly more deaths in the short term than among patients who were diagnosed with cancer between 2011 and 2019.

It is noteworthy that this trend is observed in Finland, Norway, Sweden, and Denmark, but at the same time, it has not affected Iceland at all, which has a low mortality rate from both coronavirus infection and cancer.

In Germany foreign workers risk falling into social welfare net

Zalando, a major employer in the German city of Erfurt is closing its local site, raising the question of who is responsible when corporations make such decisions despite receiving millions in taxpayer money over the years.

The Alternative for Germany (AfD) is now speaking of a system that privatizes profits, hires primarily foreigners, and then places the social burden on the German taxpayer.

The Zalando logistics center has approximately 2,700 employees and an additional 300 external workers, but they now face likely layoffs as the site is being closed down. Zalando, a major online clothing retailer, is the largest private employer in the city, and the state of Thuringia has supported the logistics site with millions for years. According to the works council, people from 62 nations are employed at the Erfurt center.

German AfD politician arrested in parliament over business in Belarus

In an unprecedented scene at Germany’s Saxony Landtag, or parliament building, Alternative for Germany (AfD) state parliamentarian Jörg Dornau was detained by police inside the chamber, just before the start of the plenary session.

Officers escorted the 56-year-old out of the room for questioning in a separate area while simultaneously searching his parliamentary office. At the same time, his residential and business premises, as well as vehicles in Rötha near Leipzig, were searched.

Leipzig’s public prosecutor’s office is investigating Dornau’s long-standing agricultural operations in Belarus, where he is a co-owner and, since late 2023, director of the company OOO Zybulka-Bel (also styled Tsybulka-Bel).

In France sex will no longer be a duty in marriage

French National Assembly voted unanimously to abolish the legal concept of “devoir conjugal” (marital duty) in the Civil Code.

Traditionally, marital duty implied that spouses had a legal obligation to engage in sexual relations — a notion rooted in old interpretations of marriage law, even though the Civil Code never explicitly spelled it out.

The new text has now clarified that the shared life of spouses (“community of life”) does not create any obligation to have sexual relations.

Notably, this is intended to help prevent sexual violence in marriage, as well as a lack of sex from being used as grounds for a fault-based divorce, closing a loophole that courts sometimes exploited, writes Le Monde.

Trump's Greenland, Canada threats reflect angst over Russia shipping

Like it or not, Russia is the biggest polar bear in the arctic, which helps to explain President Trump’s moves on Greenland. However, the Biden administration focused on it too.

And it isn’t only about access to resources and military positioning, but also about shipping. And there, the Russians are some way ahead.

Many people look on the map in exasperation at President Trump’s claims that Russian and Chinese ships are a threat to Greenland.

Those same people might also forget that the U.S. and Russia are separated in the Bering Strait by only the 2.4 miles between the Diomede islands, and that the two countries are much closer together when you stare across the north pole.

The big difference is that while the U.S. has an arctic coastline of 1,060 miles, Russia occupies around 15,000 miles of the Arctic, more than half of the total coastline.

You don’t own your stocks the way you think you do

For most of the history of securities markets—from English common law through much of the 20th century—investors who bought shares were recognized as their legal owners, often holding certificates in their own name.

Trades were slower, more cumbersome, and paper-intensive, but ownership was straightforward. If you bought shares, you were typically the registered owner by default.

The uncomfortable truth is that “customer protection” in an intermediary system is not the same as being the registered owner with clear property rights.

It is a set of promises and procedures that depend on compliance, monitoring, solvency, and the willingness of institutions to follow the rules when doing so is more costly than breaking them.

Marine Le Pen’s trial, what to expect?

After a long afternoon of closing arguments in Marine Le Pen’s appeal trial over the European parliamentary assistants’ case, the advocates general ruled in favour of upholding the sentence handed down in the first instance a year ago against the leader of the Rassemblement National (RN) MPs—albeit with some nuances.

The final verdict will not be known for several months, but Marine Le Pen’s chances of being able to stand in the 2027 presidential election are steadily dwindling.

At the end of the three-week appeal trial, the prosecution sought a four-year prison sentence for Le Pen, including one year without parole, which could be served with an electronic tag, and five years of ineligibility. However, unlike the first-instance conviction, no provisional enforcement was requested.

The Washington Post laid off more than 300 employees

Jeff Bezos, who owns the newspaper, decided to cut costs and, along with them, staff, saying goodbye to about a third of its reporters and editors. Now the Washington Post no longer has a number of bureaus, including those in Kiev, Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. The chief sports correspondent has also been laid off, although he will still be working at the Winter Olympics in Italy.

The journalists themselves are in shock and do not understand why Bezos made such a decision, as there were no preconditions for it. Emmanuel Felton and Marissa Lang are particularly surprised: Pulitzer Prize winners, whose work has never been criticized, certainly did not expect to find themselves on the list of those laid off.

Trump’s Board of Peace and the world

President Donald Trump’s proposed Board of Peace had decidedly rocky beginnings. In Europe, only Hungary and Bulgaria have joined so far. Others, in the West and around the world, have expressed reservations. It isn’t difficult to see why.

The presentation of the new international organisation was a typically Trumpian cocktail that was heavy on braggadocio and light on detail: its mission undefined, with an unclear scope (is it about Gaza, Ukraine, or the whole world?), a garish logo, weirdly reminiscent of Command and Conquer: Red Alert or of Sid Meyer’s Civilisation series, and the eyebrow-raising suggestion that joining the group might require a one billion dollar entry fee all contributed to make the project seem a tad unserious. Should we give it a chance, though?

Outrage among Britons is growing

A homeless British man died at the door of a hotel that was completely occupied by illegal immigrants at the expense of taxpayers. Exhausted, he asked for shelter for the night — he was refused.

The system, which has been paying billions for years to support migrants, proved incapable of saving its own citizen, who froze to death a meter away from a warm room occupied by a visitor.

In Germany, the interior minister is suspected of embezzlement

The head of the Interior Ministry of North Rhine-Westphalia, Herbert Reul, has been found at the center of a scandal: it all started with a conflict between his department and the Real Estate Management Agency, from which the police rent a number of buildings. The annual rent is currently €4 million, but once the buildings have been renovated, it is set to rise to €30 million.

Roel decided to settle the issue by proposing a scheme to the state treasury: until 2030, they would allocate an additional €1 billion to the Ministry of the Interior, and the ministry would give €650 million to the Real Estate Management Agency, covering both rent and renovation work. The rest of the money, apparently, was supposed to go into the pocket of the minister himself, whom his subordinates accuse of deciding this issue behind their backs.

Did big oil conspire to kneecap the EV industry?

The Michigan case, filed last week in federal court, accuses ExxonMobil, Chevron, BP, Shell, and the American Petroleum Institute of engaging in a decades-long conspiracy to block the development of clean energy and electric vehicles in order to ensure that their fossil fuel products dominate the market.

The case is distinct from the dozens of other climate deception lawsuits brought by state and local governments against oil and gas giants, instead arguing that the companies violated state and federal antitrust laws.

Acting as a “cartel,” the defendants robbed consumers of energy and transportation choices in “one of the most successful antitrust conspiracies in United States history,” the complaint says.

Residents of Hastings (UK) are demanding that Prime Minister Keir Starmer hold local elections, which he postponed in 29 constituencies

According to the official version, the reason for the postponement is "security" and "logistics." However, critics believe that the real reason is that the ruling Labour Party fears defeat at the local level.

It's simple and straightforward: democracy is good as long as you are confident of victory. As soon as the ratings drop, "extremists" and "logistical problems" appear.
