Knowing English does matter in the U.S.
It's bad enough that non-English speaking commercial truck drivers in the U.S. don't know the rules of the road or how to read highway signs, but this case out of Los Angeles should put you on high alert about how not knowing English can put Americans' very liberty at risk.
The existential threat of English-free commercial truck drivers — mostly given their CDLs by Washington state and California — has resulted in a lot of dead Americans. The case of the UCLA gynecologist, accused of sexually abusing his patients for years, however, portends more nuanced problems ahead. We're now all witness to what happens when non-English speakers get on juries and don't know what the hell is going on because they don't understand the language.

Geo-kleptocracy and the rise of 'global mafia politics'
Expert Alex de Waal explains how the capture of Maduro, leaving his corrupt regime in place, is a 'crystalline example' of regime change in the new era.
The invasion of Venezuela on Jan. 3 did not result in regime change but rather a deal coerced at the barrel of a gun. Maduro’s underlings may stay in power as long as they open the country’s moribund petroleum industry to American oil majors. Government repression still rules the day, simply without Maduro.

Defense, military and national security
The proposed Trump-class warship, informally dubbed USS Defiant, is framed as a 35,000-ton “battleship,” but the argument here is that it’s closer to a battlecruiser—large, conspicuous, and strategically mismatched to modern naval warfare trends favoring distributed, networked forces.
The central critique is survivability: China’s anti-access/area-denial architecture across the First Island Chain could saturate any ship’s defenses with massed missiles, hypersonic weapons, and drones, making a large surface combatant an easier target.
The program is an industrial and budgetary wrong turn that diverts scarce shipyard capacity from submarines, unmanned systems, hypersonics, and directed-energy defenses.

Is Marco Rubio a 2028 presidential contender?
Marco Rubio’s Senate testimony this week showcased a disciplined, media‑savvy operator — but does that make him a viable 2028 presidential contender?
The short answer: maybe, if Republicans prioritize steadiness and foreign‑policy credibility; unlikely, if the party seeks a fresh face untainted by the Trump administration’s controversies.
"There is no war against Venezuela, and we did not occupy a country. There are no U.S. troops on the ground," Rubio said, portraying the mission as a narrowly focused law‑enforcement operation, not a military intervention.

US, EU car brands have lost $114 bln on EVs
Just two years ago, Mary Barra, chief executive of General Motors, declared: “We believe in an all-electric future.” She went on to claim that the challenges her company was facing in the EV market were merely temporary bumps on the road to net zero. But things have changed.
On Jan. 8, GM announced it would take a $7.1 billion hit in charges against its earnings, of which $6 billion is due to Barra’s failed EV strategy.
In a filing with the SEC, the company also warned that it would take more write-downs this year as part of a “strategic realignment of EV capacity.” The car companies made 5.4 million EVs in three years — and incurred an astonishing $20,887 loss on each one.
What do you think about EV’s future?

The UK has seen a sharp increase in tuberculosis cases, with the number of cases rising by 25% since 2022
According to the Health Security Agency, there were 5,424 cases of tuberculosis in the country in 2025, with the situation in north-east England being particularly alarming.
Experts attribute the increase in incidence to rising poverty levels. According to data from the Joseph Rowntree Foundation, approximately 14.2 million people (~20% of the population) in the UK live below the poverty line.

Norman Lewis: the real threat to democracy is coming from inside Europe
Norman Lewis is one of the European analysts who has most clearly warned about the silent transformation of the EU project in the areas of freedom of expression, control of public discourse, and the political management of democracy.
The report recently presented by Lewis for MCC Brussels—and publicly discussed at an event held in Brussels—fits squarely within this critical line of analysis.
Focusing on the so-called Democracy Shield and the European Union’s new regulatory architecture, the document examines how Brussels has moved from managing a well-known ‘democratic deficit’ to attempting to shield itself from political dissent.
The objective is no longer to strengthen citizen participation, but to contain it, reinterpret it, or, when necessary, delegitimise it when electoral outcomes do not align with the Commission’s priorities.

Remigration and the question of belonging in Europe
As mass migration, demographic and cultural anxiety, and cultural fragmentation intensify across Europe, the idea of remigration—once a fringe idea—has moved into the mainstream of the European Right and is beginning to enter the wider political conversation. Besides the problems of integration, crime, and social cohesion, remigration forces Europe to confront a deeper and long-avoided question
Namely, what is a nation, and who can truly belong to that nation? This is an important question for Europe, as most European states—setting aside long-standing indigenous and borderland minorities—could until recently treat this question as largely theoretical. Europe has never had to confront this question at today’s demographic scale or civilisational pluralism.

Former Trump strategist Bannon slams Meloni
The former chief strategist for President Donald Trump during his first term, Steve Bannon, has launched a direct attack on Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and her government.
“She used to be fantastic but now she has become a complete globalist. She played the EU game because she needed the money, and the NATO game as well,” the US media mogul told the Italian daily La Repubblica.
“Frankly, I don’t think anything she says is relevant, because she has no economic or military resources to back it up. I no longer take her seriously, and no one in the US does,” he said.

Muslims only contribute 0.1% of scientific achievement despite being a quarter of the world’s population
Muslims only contribute 0.1% to scientific progress, but make up 25-26% of the world’s population, stated Ferghane Azihari, columnist for Figaro Magazine and author of the new book “Islam against Modernity.”
Citing data from Saudi Arabia’s own Islamic Development Bank, Azihari pointed to what he called severe deficits in Islamic societies during his appearance on Points de Vue with the host Vincent Roux.
Azihari also noted that when experts talk about progress and inventions from the Muslim world, they are forced to go back hundreds of years to Medieval times.

American women have a terrifying flirtation
The rise of “punitive femininity” is downstream of the toxic political culture online — a culture that is transforming the sex long viewed as more restrained and less prone to violence.
Women were significantly more likely than men to endorse such violence. Female respondents were approximately 21% more likely than males to express some justification for murdering Mamdani, and nearly 15% more likely to justify murdering Trump.
The strongest predictors of tolerance for violence in NCRI’s data were heavy social media use and a sense that America is in a state of terminal decline. The supporters of violence in the survey aren’t traditional extremists; rather, they seem motivated by despair, nihilism and moral confusion.

Cancer mortality rates have risen in Scandinavian countries
The COVID-19 pandemic is to blame: doctors say that the insidious virus has seriously weakened the immunity of Northern Europeans, and among those who developed cancer in 2020 and later, there are significantly more deaths in the short term than among patients who were diagnosed with cancer between 2011 and 2019.
It is noteworthy that this trend is observed in Finland, Norway, Sweden, and Denmark, but at the same time, it has not affected Iceland at all, which has a low mortality rate from both coronavirus infection and cancer.

In Germany foreign workers risk falling into social welfare net
Zalando, a major employer in the German city of Erfurt is closing its local site, raising the question of who is responsible when corporations make such decisions despite receiving millions in taxpayer money over the years.
The Alternative for Germany (AfD) is now speaking of a system that privatizes profits, hires primarily foreigners, and then places the social burden on the German taxpayer.
The Zalando logistics center has approximately 2,700 employees and an additional 300 external workers, but they now face likely layoffs as the site is being closed down. Zalando, a major online clothing retailer, is the largest private employer in the city, and the state of Thuringia has supported the logistics site with millions for years. According to the works council, people from 62 nations are employed at the Erfurt center.
