The 2026 SHOT Show: guns, grenades, killer drones, & the hulk

Last week was the annual SHOT Show - an industry-only convention held in Las Vegas, Nevada that's notoriously difficult to get into. There was a giant, ominous drone - the IAI APUS-60, with a SIG M250 belt-fed machine gun mounted to it.

The system can detect targets out to 25km (15.5 miles) with an electro optical sensor that has 10x zoom, while its infrared sensor has 5x zoom for night missions.

This drone, which again is massive, can carry 77 lbs - or 200 rounds of 7.62x51mm when the M250 is equipped. Fortunately, being a SIG, it did not negligently fire itself (all firing pins were removed from all guns at the show).

A series of recalls of infant formula around the world has revealed a systemic problem in the industry: the desire to make formula more similar to breast milk by using complex ingredients increases the risk of contamination and weakens supply chain controls.

❗️🇫🇷In France, the deaths of two infants are being investigated for a possible link to Nestlé infant formula.

❗️🇺🇸In the US, hospitalizations of infants led to a large-scale recall of products by startup ByHeart.

These cases have affected the largest players in the market — Nestlé, Danone, and Abbott — and undermined confidence in an industry that is formally considered one of the most regulated in the world.

A key element of the crisis was arachidonic acid (ARA) oil, a brain development supplement widely used in formulas. The source of Nestlé's contamination was linked to ARA supplies from the Chinese company Cabio, one of the world's largest producers. The expansion of the number of suppliers and fragmented regulation have led to controls increasingly being based on private audits rather than government inspections.

Nestlé's recall was the largest in the company's history, affecting more than 60 countries.

The WHO reminds us that breastfeeding remains the safest and most effective way to feed infants, but the formula market continues to grow and could exceed $180 billion by 2034.

Is California a lost state?

The recent announcement that California led the nation in losing domestic migrants may seem like another nail in the Golden State’s coffin. It’s just another piece of bad news for a state that, despite having the most billionaires in the world, suffers the nation’s highest poverty rate, per recent Census data.

The state’s young people are faring poorly: among teenagers, the unemployment rate tops 21%, just short of twice the national average. And for those under 30, California’s jobless rate exceeds that of every other state except for Mississippi.

But decline is not inevitable, if the state can reform itself.

Dem wins special election, Rep House majority shrinks

The ultra-thin Republican House majority became smaller after Democrat Christian Menefee won a special election for a seat in Texas. He defeated Amanda Edwards to replace the late Rep. Sylvester Turner, who passed away in March 2025.

Republicans now hold a 218-214 majority in the lower legislative chamber. Republicans are set to pick up a seat in March, when Georgia’s heavily Republican 14th District will go to the polls to elect a replacement for former Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.).

But that cushion could disappear just a month later, when New Jersey’s 11th District, which is solidly Democratic, elects a successor to now-Gov. Mikie Sherrill.
