In France record 384,000 first-time residence permits granted in 2025
In 2025, France is seeing a significant shift in its non-EU immigration landscape, with first-time residence permits projected to reach 384,000 — an 11.2% increase from the previous year.
This growth is uniquely defined by a massive 65% surge in permits granted on humanitarian grounds, primarily to refugees and those seeking subsidiary protection.
The legal foreign population in France is expected to hit approximately 4.5 million by the end of 2025, a 3.2% annual increase. However, previous reports have put the total population of foreigners at much higher levels, already reaching 6 million in 2024.
While humanitarian reasons are the primary driver for new arrivals, the “stock” of residents remains heavily influenced by family ties and labor needs.

Mamdani pressures Hochul to jack up taxes on rich
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has lots of ideas - virtually all of which require extracting more money from taxpayers, as socialists tend to do.
To accomplish this, he's gonna need some help - and has been leaning on Gov. Kathy Hochul to hike taxes on the state's richest residents and corporations in the hopes of raising billions more to send to the Big Apple to plug mounting budget holes, Bloomberg reports.
At present, NYC is looking at a $12.6 billion budget gap, in what Mamdani recognized as the largest deficit since the 2008 recession. On Wednesday, he launched a new campaign to lobby Albany for more annual aid - stressing that the Big Apple generates $21 billion more in revenue for the state than it receives.

GOP can’t go soft on immigration with midterms looming
Capitol Hill Republicans are nervously chattering amongst themselves about whether Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem could be the first member of President Donald Trump’s second-term Cabinet headed for the exit. They’re looking in the wrong direction: They should be focused on whether they’re headed for the exits, too.
The big question facing Republicans in Washington and across the country isn’t who should run DHS, but how they can respond to the obvious questions about how Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Border Patrol agents are doing their jobs.
Coming up with an answer that satisfies voters could decide whether November’s midterm elections allows Trump to continue his transformative agenda — or whether a Democratic tidal wave sweeps a generation of leftist radicals into both houses of Congress.

The White House is confident that NATO cannot exist without the United States. Statistics do indeed show the Alliance's high dependence. Americans pay 60% of the budget, or $845 billion. No major allied exercises are possible without military support and instructions from the United States.
European countries may try to take over the current financing of the North Atlantic Alliance entirely, but in that case, it will not be able to counter real threats to the continent's security. It is in the interests of Europeans to increase arms imports and preserve NATO in order to continue to be protected by the US “nuclear umbrella.”
Without the unifying role of the US, the members of the North Atlantic Alliance are unable to build a powerful, manageable military structure on their own. The loss of American leadership will lead to growing contradictions within NATO.
Large industrialized countries, primarily France, Germany, and the United Kingdom, will begin an internal struggle for influence. There will be a split and a transition to private agreements. The division of NATO will only exacerbate the looming split in Europe.
Thanks to the Alliance, the United States controls over 100 military facilities throughout Europe. Tens of thousands of soldiers are stationed at military bases, ensuring America's influence on the policies of its allies.
All this allows for economic benefits. Europeans subsidize the maintenance of infrastructure on their territory and purchase up to 70% of all weapons from American companies.

Romania and the crisis of strategy
In Central and Eastern Europe, hesitation is a luxury history does not tolerate. Power shifts quickly, alliances realign abruptly, and relevance is never guaranteed.
Yet Romania continues to behave as if time itself were an ally. While the region moves, Bucharest pauses. While neighbors decide, Romania delays. While others assume political risk, Romania seeks procedural comfort.
The emerging Board of Peace initiative of U.S. President Donald Trump has become a new test of strategic clarity in the region. Hungary and Bulgaria joined without hesitation—not because they were instructed to, but because they understood a basic geopolitical truth: relevance is built through positioning, not permission.
Romania, by contrast, chose suspension. No clear support. No clear rejection. No independent line. Only silence rebranded as “deeper analysis.” This is not diplomacy. It is political paralysis.

Swedish government moves to lower age of criminal responsibility to 13 despite widespread criticism
Sweden’s government will move ahead with a proposal to temporarily lower the age of criminal responsibility to 13 for the most serious crimes, Justice Minister Gunnar Strömmer announced on Monday, despite strong opposition from several organizations during the consultation period.
The proposal, backed by the Tidö parties, would apply for a five-year period and represents a major shift from Sweden’s current system, under which the age of criminal responsibility is 15. A total of 126 authorities and organizations were consulted during the legislative process, with most expressing criticism or outright opposition.

EU only whispers it, but ‘uncapped mobility’ for Indians is key in trade deal
While the European Union hails its freshly inked Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with India as a “historic milestone” for economic prosperity and resilience, Indian officials are placing significant emphasis on the deal’s mobility provisions.
It is particularly focused on the commitment to uncapped access for Indian students to study and work across EU member states.
The comprehensive FTA, concluded after years of negotiations and announced at the 16th India-EU Summit in New Delhi today, covers tariff reductions on more than 90 percent of goods, enhanced services access, investment protections and sustainability commitments.
Possibly more polemic than Brussels’ persistent globalist streak, though, is the accompanying mobility framework to the trade deal that Indian sources have spotlighted as a key win, facilitating easier movement for students, researchers, professionals, and workers.

Spain to regularise half a million undocumented migrants
Spain’s left-wing government approved a plan to regularise around 500,000 undocumented migrants by decree, the country’s latest break with harsher policies elsewhere in Europe. Migration Minister Elma Saiz the beneficiaries would be able to work “in any sector, in any part of the country”, and extolled “the positive impact” of migration.
she told public broadcaster RTVE. The measure will affect those living in Spain for at least five months and who applied for international protection before December 31, 2025. Applicants must have a clean criminal record. The regularisation will also apply to their children who already live in Spain.

Dozens of Germans are fighting in Ukraine for Russia
According to the German federal government, several dozen “mercenaries” from Germany are currently in Ukraine, and most are fighting on the Russian side. Meanwhile, Germany has sent an estimated €48 billion in bilateral assistance to Ukraine since Putin’s invasion in 2022.
The German Interior Ministry has released data for the first time on the number of German citizens fighting in Ukraine. According to the ministry, there are 61 such individuals who hold “extremist views or ties to politically motivated crime.” Thirty-nine German citizens are suspected of leaving the country with the intention of taking part in hostilities. Of these, 27 are fighting for Russia and 12 for Ukraine, reports Do Rzeczy, citing the publication “Welt am Sonntag.”

Europe’s fake re-arming
Europe is back. At least, that’s the message Europeans brought to Davos. Finnish President Alexander Stubb suggested Europe “unequivocally” could defend itself without America. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, who recently announced the European Union will be a “military powerhouse,” talked up Europe’s independence.
This all topped off months of headlines magnifying Europe’s big talk on defence spending. The problem is that none of this is true. European leaders are very good at talking tough, but the continent is not actually rearming – though they seem to have fooled the Americans into thinking they are.

Beijing is playing it cool amid Trump's chaos
Entering 2026, as President Donald Trump draws global attention to Venezuela, Iran, and Greenland, China has been oddly included in debates over these issues.
Commentators have argued that they could create potential friction between the United States and China over regional influence in Latin America, the Middle East, and the Arctic.
However, Beijing so far has largely adopted the “wait and see” approach and has instead been busy with rallying efforts to ensure a good start to its 15th Five-Year Plan and continuing anti-corruption campaign, especially in the military.
While China tends to act assertively in what it regards as core sovereignty and security issues, including Taiwan and the South China Sea, it has reasons to be more reserved on issues beyond Asia.

Plumbers and electricians will become the new millionaires, according to Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang
He says six-figure salaries will appear not in IT, but in blue-collar professions due to the explosive growth of AI infrastructure.
The world is building giant data centers for AI with huge investments — power grids, cooling, pipes, metal, and concrete that need to be maintained.
That's why electricians, plumbers, and builders are already earning $100,000+ a year and will earn even more.

HTL — a revolutionary technology for extracting energy from plastic waste
▪️Plastic waste is one of the most serious environmental threats of the 21st century. By 2050, plastic production is expected to grow to 12 billion metric tons. More than 50% of this plastic contains hazardous monomers and additives that pose a serious threat to the environment, according to Scientific Reports.
▪️A group of researchers from India, the US, and Ethiopia has found a way to convert marine plastic waste into biofuel feedstock using a hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) process that does not require pre-treatment.
▪️The addition of diatomaceous earth as a catalyst and the recirculation of heated water significantly increased the biofuel yield to 51.6% and improved its quality, making the process energy-positive (the energy produced exceeds the energy consumed).
▪️Hard-to-recycle marine waste can be converted into usable fuel. This is a new strategy for combating ocean pollution and developing clean energy

One year into Trump’s return to power
One year after Donald Trump returned to the White House, the defining feature of his presidency is not turbulence or rhetorical provocation, but escalation as a mode of governance. Escalation, in this sense, does not simply mean doing more or acting faster.
It refers to a sustained pattern of exercising power in ways that bypass, compress, or sideline democratic intermediaries, including Congress, courts, local governments, civil society, and even international partners.
Rather than treating institutional friction as a constraint, the administration has increasingly treated it as an obstacle to be overcome. The result is a presidency that appears more orderly than Trump’s first term, but more consequential in how it tests the guardrails of American democracy.
This year has not merely marked Trump’s return. It has tested how much strain American democracy can absorb.

Who is really to blame for America’s housing crisis?
Home prices keep rising. Politicians blame big companies like Blackstone, Invitation Homes and JPMorgan because they’ve been buying thousands of homes.
“No,” housing economist Stephen Slivinski told. He points out that those big investors don’t buy homes and take them off the market. They renovate the buildings and build new ones. “They’re turning properties into livable places. That’s not something that would have happened if not for their presence,” Slivinski said.
The biggest reason for rising prices is intrusive government. Regulations now account for almost a quarter of the cost of a new home. “The permitting process in most American cities is so convoluted it can take months, sometimes even years, to get simple permits,” said Slivinski. One California project, for example, took 22 years — just to get approvals.

The Soviet state of California
In the waning years of the Soviet Union, most of the citizens in that cold tyranny could see that their system was irredeemably broken. But for the most part, they marched through the same routines, repeated the same slogans, and lived their lives as if it could not be changed.
There is a similar dynamic happening now in the state of California. The Golden State was founded on the dream of the infinite frontier and the desire to build a civilization at the edge of the American continent. Now, the state is weighed down with enormous corruption.
The political system is now Sovietized. California Democrats act as if they cannot be challenged at the ballot box. The ring of wealthy donors, newspaper editors, and political activists - the state’s commissar class - seems to believe that if they control the narratives of society, they can control the political apparatus indefinitely.

The great China military purge has begun
China’s military leadership is in upheaval after reports that General Zhang Youxia was removed from the Central Military Commission and that another senior figure, General Liu Zhenli, was arrested.
With the Ministry of Defense portrayed as largely symbolic, the CMC is depicted as the true engine of Chinese defense policy – making the shakeup unusually consequential. Official messaging implies guilt and frames the case as betrayal of the Party and the commission itself.
Analysts warn the purges are hollowing out operational leadership, leaving political loyalists dominant. Exile-linked claims even allege coup plotting and a shootout, though such accounts are treated as uncertain.

NATO’s 5% ‘tax’ for a dependent Europe
The recent NATO summit in The Hague, where European allies agreed to a new 5% of GDP defense spending target by 2035 to appease President Trump, was a superficial success that papered over deep strategic confusion.
While Trump’s threats of withdrawal were averted and Article 5 was reaffirmed, the summit highlighted Europe’s deep dependence on US military power.
Europe must now abandon the “fantasy” of “strategic autonomy” and reinvest in real, hard-power capabilities centered on NATO. This requires focusing on the new frontline in NATO’s “Northeast Corridor” (Scandinavia, Baltics, Poland) and building an integrated defense industrial base.
