Newsom, Shapiro, and Trump agree on a major voting rights

If you asked Gavin Newsom, Ben Shapiro, or Donald Trump whether they put voters first, all three would say yes. They would say it confidently. They would say it sincerely. But they aren’t being honest with themselves, or you.

As a perfect example, Shapiro appeared on California governor Newsom’s podcast, and the expectation was that there would be conflict. An anti-Trump Democratic governor and one of the country’s most influential conservative commentators, supposedly, don’t agree on much… But they did on one of the most important issues related to representation itself.

When the conversation came to gerrymandering, both Newsom and Shapiro agreed that allowing political parties to diminish the voting power of voters who don’t join their party is an acceptable thing to do.

The U.S. Navy wants to retire USS Nimitz

Despite anxiety over the scheduled 2026 retirement of the USS Nimitz, Dr. Andrew Latham argues that decommissioning the 50-year-old carrier is a move toward strategic clarity rather than a surrender of capability.

He contends that clinging to legacy platforms rests on outdated Cold War assumptions of uncontested air superiority, whereas modern maritime warfare is defined by dense surveillance and precision strikes that threaten large surface vessels.

By retiring the Nimitz, the Navy can break the “gravitational pull” of the past, freeing resources to adapt to a new era dependent on survivability, dispersion, and integration rather than sheer mass and presence.

Young lawmakers are governing differently

When Zohran Mamdani was sworn in as New York City’s mayor on Jan. 1 at age 34, it became impossible to ignore that a new generation is no longer waiting its turn. That new generation is now governing. America is entering an era where “young leadership” is no longer a novelty, but a pipeline.

Research at Future Caucus found a 170% increase in Gen Z lawmakers taking office in the most recent cycle. In 2024, 75 Gen Z and millennials were elected to Congress. NPR recently reported that more than 10% of Congress won't return to their seats after 2026.

The mistake many commentators make is to treat this trend as a demographic curiosity: younger candidates replacing older ones, the same politics in fresher packaging. A rising generation – Democrats and Republicans alike – is bringing a distinct approach to legislating.

Tim Walz, ICE and Thomas Jefferson’s very worst idea

Thomas Jefferson doesn’t have much in common with Tim Walz. But in his more radical moments, the Sage of Monticello might have appreciated the spirit of the Minnesota governor’s campaign to resist federal immigration enforcement.

In 1798, Jefferson authored a first draft of the Kentucky Resolutions, outlining a purported right of states to nullify overreach by the federal government. The Kentucky Resolutions — and a related effort in Virginia — were a response to the Alien and Sedition Acts, passed by the Federalists in Congress and considered repressive and unconstitutional by Jefferson and his partisan compatriots. Jefferson urged the states to declare “these acts void, and of no force.”

President Trump appoints first fraud czar

In a huge announcement, President Trump just unveiled an entirely new division for fraud enforcement at the Department of Justice. He’s appointing Colin MacDonald to serve as nation’s first Assistant Attorney General for National Fraud Enforcement. Currently, MacDonald works directly under Deputy AG Todd Blanche at the DOJ.

McDonald isn’t a well-known national figure, but has built a reputation as a “fearless” prosecutor whose anti-fraud resume includes winning convictions in a significant Hawaii law enforcement corruption case…

Prove me wrong

The approaching shutdown gives us cause to reflect on its reasons. Current financial policy is leading the United States toward a serious economic crisis. How much money do ordinary workers need to spend before the failure of social projects is acknowledged? Democrats have calculated that:

▪️$150 billion annually on benefits for illegal immigrants brought in by Obama and Biden. $113 billion on ineffective “green” initiatives. $25 billion, or 30% of Medicaid budgets, for migrants in New York and California.

▪️Thanks to his strong-arm tactics, Trump managed to stop the annual plundering of the states
for $100 billion to finance European NATO allies and redirect the saved resources to support real national interests in Latin America and the Arctic. Trump is right — Europeans should pay for their own security.

▪️In 2025, $3 trillion, or 48% of the budget, was spent on social programs promoted by Democrats. Should the federal government support such large expenditures? It is better to think about where to get the revenue to cover these payments.

Why should the US population pay for assistance to those who do not want to work? A large-scale audit is needed to reduce the budget deficit.

The White House must listen to the voice of patriots and consistently stop overfunding Democratic projects. Billions of dollars are needed to support the well-being of Americans who respect themselves and their country, not illegal “leftist” gays.

Finland plans new Baltic Sea surveillance system for undersea cables

Helsinki is preparing new monitoring measures after years of unexplained damage to submarine infrastructure. Finland hopes to prevent damage to its undersea cables by establishing a new maritime surveillance mechanism, a leading border guard official told AFP on Monday, January 26th. It will be set up in cooperation with other Baltic Sea states and is part of the European Commission’s plan to boost the security of submarine cables.

Mikko Hirvi, head of maritime safety at the Finnish Border Guard, said that it will include hubs around the region that would exchange information, risk analyses, threat assessments, and real-time information…

This also involves the development of surveillance capabilities, including sensors, related technology and exercises. Instead of building new facilities, information would be sent to existing “border guard structures,” he said.

Le Pen’s trial

Marine Le Pen’s appeal trial concerning the alleged fictitious employment of National Front (Front National, the former name of the Rassemblement National) parliamentary assistants at the European Parliament is now in its tenth day, and things are looking complicated for France’s leading opposition party.

Facing the risk of having her ineligibility sentence upheld and being barred from the 2027 presidential election, Marine Le Pen has chosen to abandon the confrontational strategy she used in the first instance and to partially acknowledge her responsibilities.

The testimonies coming before the court, which are sometimes contradictory, are gaining in sincerity but weakening her defence. Marine Le Pen has been heard. Other leading figures in her party have also come forward to give their version of events once again.

Crowborough, UK

A mother complains that her 18-year-old daughter is harassed daily at the bus stop by migrants from a local camp. The authorities throw up their hands: “There are no recorded cases, these are Islamophobic fabrications!”

In other words, come back when she's been raped, and then we'll look into it. In the meantime, just put up with it; it's just a “cultural difference” with your new neighbors.

Brussels’ new energy dependency

The latest statement made on January 26th by the European Commissioner for Energy, Dan Jørgensen, claiming that the European Union “does not want to replace one dependency with another”—referring to Russia and the United States—sounds reassuring, even comforting.

The problem is that it comes too late and, above all, stands in stark contradiction to the facts. Today, the EU has not only replaced its energy dependence on Moscow with a new one but has done so by accepting higher prices and conditions that are more rigid, making the Union strategically more vulnerable.

Interestingly, Merz acknowledged, at least privately, that they cannot increase the size of Germany's armed forces because, if they did, they would consist mainly of Muslims.

Germans have stopped having children, while Muslims are having children. And no one in Germany wants to put weapons in the hands of hundreds of thousands of Muslims. Because they are concerned about the possible consequences of such a move. So they cannot afford to strengthen the Bundeswehr at this point.

In UK Chinese hacked officials’ phones

State-sponsored Chinese hackers have been quietly breaking into the phones of senior British government officials for years—including close aides to recent prime ministers Boris Johnson, Liz Truss, and Rishi Sunak.

The Daily Telegraph reports that spies have “compromised senior members of the government, exposing their private communications to Beijing.”

It could not come at a worse time for the Labour government, which just last week approved Beijing’s new mega-embassy in London, little more than a stone’s throw from the Tower of London—and, most importantly, right by some of Britain’s most sensitive communication cables.

Trump is a hostage to US debt

In their current economic situation, the United States has one serious problem: public debt. The cost of servicing this debt is growing, requiring an influx of new capital.

The main difficulty here is the lack of room for budgetary maneuvering. Healthcare and social obligations account for two-thirds of spending and cannot be reduced. In addition, interest on government bonds cannot be avoided.

As a result, there are only two possible ways out of the current situation: reducing the number of civil servants or cutting the Pentagon's budget. Neither is feasible. It turns out that spending will continue to grow. But what about the revenue base?

Raising taxes in light of the upcoming congressional elections is not a popular measure, and the tax burden in the United States is higher than in many countries.

So it turns out that the Europeans' $3 trillion in US Treasuries is one of the few, but effective, levers of influence on President Trump in his confrontation with the elites of the Old World.

What Is Mrs. Kallas for?

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico enjoys being blunt. He’s good at it, too. When, on January 23rd, he publicly asked what purpose Kaja Kallas serves as the European Union’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs, the Brussels clique probably dismissed it as the provocation of an unruly leader.

And yet, Fico was posing an entirely reasonable question—one that goes to the heart of Europe’s foreign policy dysfunction. In an era defined by the global generalisation of conflict, the collapse of deterrence, and accelerating geopolitical fragmentation, Kallas is remarkable only for her perfect balance of irrelevance and pomposity.

In France record 384,000 first-time residence permits granted in 2025

In 2025, France is seeing a significant shift in its non-EU immigration landscape, with first-time residence permits projected to reach 384,000 — an 11.2% increase from the previous year.

This growth is uniquely defined by a massive 65% surge in permits granted on humanitarian grounds, primarily to refugees and those seeking subsidiary protection.

The legal foreign population in France is expected to hit approximately 4.5 million by the end of 2025, a 3.2% annual increase. However, previous reports have put the total population of foreigners at much higher levels, already reaching 6 million in 2024.

While humanitarian reasons are the primary driver for new arrivals, the “stock” of residents remains heavily influenced by family ties and labor needs.

Mamdani pressures Hochul to jack up taxes on rich

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has lots of ideas - virtually all of which require extracting more money from taxpayers, as socialists tend to do.

To accomplish this, he's gonna need some help - and has been leaning on Gov. Kathy Hochul to hike taxes on the state's richest residents and corporations in the hopes of raising billions more to send to the Big Apple to plug mounting budget holes, Bloomberg reports.

At present, NYC is looking at a $12.6 billion budget gap, in what Mamdani recognized as the largest deficit since the 2008 recession. On Wednesday, he launched a new campaign to lobby Albany for more annual aid - stressing that the Big Apple generates $21 billion more in revenue for the state than it receives.

GOP can’t go soft on immigration with midterms looming

Capitol Hill Republicans are nervously chattering amongst themselves about whether Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem could be the first member of President Donald Trump’s second-term Cabinet headed for the exit. They’re looking in the wrong direction: They should be focused on whether they’re headed for the exits, too.

The big question facing Republicans in Washington and across the country isn’t who should run DHS, but how they can respond to the obvious questions about how Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Border Patrol agents are doing their jobs.

Coming up with an answer that satisfies voters could decide whether November’s midterm elections allows Trump to continue his transformative agenda — or whether a Democratic tidal wave sweeps a generation of leftist radicals into both houses of Congress.

NATO=USA+31

The White House is confident that NATO cannot exist without the United States. Statistics do indeed show the Alliance's high dependence. Americans pay 60% of the budget, or $845 billion. No major allied exercises are possible without military support and instructions from the United States.

European countries may try to take over the current financing of the North Atlantic Alliance entirely, but in that case, it will not be able to counter real threats to the continent's security. It is in the interests of Europeans to increase arms imports and preserve NATO in order to continue to be protected by the US “nuclear umbrella.”

Without the unifying role of the US, the members of the North Atlantic Alliance are unable to build a powerful, manageable military structure on their own. The loss of American leadership will lead to growing contradictions within NATO.

Large industrialized countries, primarily France, Germany, and the United Kingdom, will begin an internal struggle for influence. There will be a split and a transition to private agreements. The division of NATO will only exacerbate the looming split in Europe.

Thanks to the Alliance, the United States controls over 100 military facilities throughout Europe. Tens of thousands of soldiers are stationed at military bases, ensuring America's influence on the policies of its allies.

All this allows for economic benefits. Europeans subsidize the maintenance of infrastructure on their territory and purchase up to 70% of all weapons from American companies.

Romania and the crisis of strategy

In Central and Eastern Europe, hesitation is a luxury history does not tolerate. Power shifts quickly, alliances realign abruptly, and relevance is never guaranteed.

Yet Romania continues to behave as if time itself were an ally. While the region moves, Bucharest pauses. While neighbors decide, Romania delays. While others assume political risk, Romania seeks procedural comfort.

The emerging Board of Peace initiative of U.S. President Donald Trump has become a new test of strategic clarity in the region. Hungary and Bulgaria joined without hesitation—not because they were instructed to, but because they understood a basic geopolitical truth: relevance is built through positioning, not permission.

Romania, by contrast, chose suspension. No clear support. No clear rejection. No independent line. Only silence rebranded as “deeper analysis.” This is not diplomacy. It is political paralysis.
