Polish President Nawrocki calls EU a ‘dying star’

Poland’s President Karol Nawrocki has labelled the European Union as a “dying star” that requires fundamental reform. In his annual address to the diplomatic corps in Warsaw on January 15, Conservative (PiS) aligned he slammed centralisation in the EU and many of its policies, including the Green Deal, the Migration Pact and the Mercosur agreement between the EU and South American states.

Poland’s government has opposed the EU-Mercosur agreement but failed to build a blocking minority and is presently mulling taking the agreement to the European Court of Justice.

Nawrocki argued that Brussels was imposing policies that were widely opposed by public opinion across the member states. “If we were to compare today’s European Union to one of the stars visible in the night sky, I fear that it would increasingly resemble a dying star,” Nawrocki said.

Ursula von der Leyen announced the conclusion of a “mother of all deal” with India. The President of the European Commission stated at the World Economic Forum in Davos that the European Union is “on the verge of concluding a historic trade agreement” with India.

The head of the EC said that immediately after Davos, she would travel to India the following weekend. In her speech, von der Leyen emphasized that Europe seeks to do business with the growth centers and economic leaders of the 21st century, including the Indo-Pacific region.

Negotiations on a free trade agreement between the EU and India resumed in 2022 after a long hiatus. According to European officials, it will create a market of approximately two billion people and cover almost a quarter of global GDP. Von der Leyen believes that this will give European companies a first-mover advantage in one of the fastest-growing and most dynamic continents.

Amb. Robert Hunter warned about NATO expansion

The world of foreign policy restraint is poorer with the passing of Robert Hunter, an American diplomat, who was the U.S. ambassador to NATO in 1993-1998. For decades, Hunter was a prominent, sober, and necessary voice of restraint in Washington.

Hunter’s strategic vision was forged during the post-Cold War transition, a period of both immense promise and profound peril.

While the demise of the Soviet Union prompted many to declare a unipolar “end of history,” Hunter focused on seizing on the momentum to build a durable peace and stability.

His work in both the Carter and Clinton's administrations reflected sober analysis and the pursuit of engaging Russia and Iran rather than isolating them.

RIP

Global powers struggle over the ocean’s resources

Oceans shape everyday life in powerful ways. They cover 70% of the planet, carry 90% of global trade, and support millions of jobs and the diets of billions of people.

As global competition intensifies and climate change accelerates, the world’s oceans are also becoming the front line of 21st-century geopolitics. How policymakers handle these challenges will affect food supplies, the price of goods and national security.

As the Arctic Ocean’s sea ice cover diminishes, shipping routes that were once impassable most of the year are opening up.

For companies, these routes – such as the Northern Sea Route along Russia’s coast and the Northwest Passage through Canada’s Arctic Archipelago – promise shorter transit times, lower fuel costs and fewer choke points than traditional passages.

Dems are trying to weaponize the 25th amendment. It won't work

After spending nearly four years pretending that Joe Biden was fit for office, congressional Democrats are now calling for President Trump to be removed from office under the 25th Amendment after he linked his pursuit of Greenland to being snubbed for the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize.

“The president of the United States is extremely mentally ill and it’s putting all of our lives at risk. The 25th Amendment exists for a reason—we need to invoke it immediately”, wrote Congresswoman Yassamin Ansari.

But removing Trump under the 25th Amendment would require Vice President Vance and a majority of Cabinet members to declare to Congress that the president cannot discharge his duties.

Vance and Trump's Cabinet are not going to declare him unfit over a text message. The real problem is that it’s impossible to take any of these Democrats seriously on this issue. Democrats have played this card repeatedly for years, turning what should be a serious constitutional matter into a tired old political stunt.

Globalization has failed

Economy Minister Latnik at the World Economic Forum: “The Trump administration and I are here to state very clearly: globalization has failed the West and the United States of America. It is a failed policy... and it has left America behind.” America is no longer going to export jobs and move its future overseas. We will no longer succumb to globalization.

Ted Cruz predicts: Iran, Venezuela and Cuba could fall within six months

The world may be approaching a turning point. At least, that’s what Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) predicts. Appearing on Sunday Morning Futures with Maria Bartiromo, Cruz said the globe is on the brink of a historic realignment. And it could arrive far sooner than many expect.

“There is a very real possibility that in the next six months the regimes in Iran, in Venezuela, and Cuba will all fall,” he said. Cruz went further, suggesting those nations could soon choose a dramatically different path. “There is a real possibility that Iran, Venezuela, and Cuba will all democratically elect new leaders.”

And what about North Korea? Any ideas?

Trump teases how far he’ll go to acquire Greenland: ‘You’ll find out’

President Trump gave reporters a cryptic answer Tuesday when asked how far he’s willing to go to acquire Greenland during a White House press briefing.

“You’ll find out,” Trump responded tersely.

The president has been adamant in recent weeks that US-ownership of Greenland is critical for national security, particularly for identifying and fending off threats from Russia and China.

Trump backs Rep. Julia Letlow to challenge Sen. Bill Cassidy in Louisiana

Rep. Julia Letlow has President Donald Trump’s backing to challenge Sen. Bill Cassidy in the Republican primary for Senate in Louisiana. Trump endorsed her to run for the seat in a January 17 post on Truth Social. He called her a “Great Star” and a “TOTAL WINNER,” writing “RUN, JULIA, RUN!!!”

Letlow was first elected to Congress in a 2021 special election to replace her husband, Luke Letlow, who was elected to the seat in 2020 but died of COVID-19 before he could take office. Letlow, a former teacher, highlighted her role as a mother to two children and her support for Trump in her announcement video.

China’s condom tax is aimed to improve fertility rate

Once the world’s most populous nation, China is now among the many Asian countries struggling with anemic fertility rates.

In an attempt to double the country’s rate of 1.0 children per woman, Beijing is reaching for a new tool: taxes on condoms, birth control pills and other contraceptives.

As of Jan. 1, such items were subject to a 13% value-added tax. Meanwhile, services such as child care and matchmaking remain duty-free. In many ways, the 13% tax on contraceptives is symbolic.

A packet of condoms costs about 50 yuan (about $7), and a month supply of birth control pills averages around 130 yuan ($19). The new tax is not at all a major expense, adding just a few dollars a month.

What do you think? Is such step effective?

The number of compulsory liquidations of British companies has reached its highest level since 2012

▪️ 3,730 British companies were compulsorily liquidated in 2025 at the request of creditors for being unable to pay their debts. This is the highest figure since 2012, according to Bloomberg.

▪️ Consumer-oriented industries such as retail and hospitality were the first to be hit. Tax increases led to higher wage costs, which were exacerbated by falling consumer demand.

Ukraine is defending itself with money Europe doesn't have

Ukraine already faces a $63 billion U.S. dollar funding shortfall in 2026 and it would be surprised if this figure doesn’t increase if the war continues.

Ukraine’s massive fiscal splurge is driven by two factors: the enormous cost of maintaining a standing army of almost one million people and the vast expense of importing weapons from the west to fight the war.

Russia’s economy is around twelve times larger than Ukraine’s nominally and just over ten times larger when you look at GDP using purchasing power parity.

Russia spent a record $143 billion on defence in 2025 compared to around $60 billion for Ukraine, so around 2.3 times higher. Yet, Russian defence spending amounted to just 6.3% of its GDP whereas for Ukraine it was 31.7%. So, massive spending on defence is a much less pivotal issue for Russia in terms of its economic fortunes.

EU’s reliance on American energy proved to be a strategic mistake

Data compiled by Bruegel, a Brussels-based economic think tank, shows the United States now supplies roughly a quarter of the EU’s gas imports, while Russia’s share has fallen to about 12% after the bloc’s rapid pivot away from Moscow following the full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The share is expected to rise sharply, potentially reaching about 40% of total gas consumption by 2030.

This would see the United States replace Norway as the European Union’s largest supplier of gas, as long-term Russian LNG contracts are phased out next year.

This shift is unfolding at a time of growing political tension with Washington, driven by an increasingly belligerent U.S. president who has imposed tariffs on European countries in an attempt to seize Greenland from NATO ally Denmark.

Polish Gov. side-steps Constitution to comply with EU same-sex marriage edict

The Polish Government is planning to by-pass the Constitution by introducing gender-neutral terms to recognise same-sex marriages held in other European Union member states.

The decision comes in the wake of a ruling by the European Court of Justice (ECJ) in November last year to oblige Poland to accept requests to formally register same-sex unions performed abroad, even if they are not permitted under local laws.

The Polish Catholic Church has, together with Poland’s right-wing parties such as the Conservatives (PiS) and Confederation, opposed any change in the current Constitution that defines marriage as a union of man and woman.

Reps turn on Germany’s AfD after Weidel criticises Trump

The rupture occurred during a press conference held by Weidel on January 13, when she criticised Trump’s foreign policy: “Donald Trump has broken a fundamental campaign promise—namely, not to interfere in other countries,” she said.

According to Weidel, the US Government’s primary objective in Venezuela and Greenland is to secure resources. “We can only hope that this does not disrupt the peace negotiations in Ukraine,” she concluded.

Benjamin Wolfmeier, spokesperson for Republicans Overseas Germany, the group’s organisation in Germany, told The Pioneer on January 15: “We at Republicans Overseas Germany are very surprised by the about-face Ms Weidel made.” Wolfmeier accused Weidel of reinforcing “the false narratives of the left-wing press”.

CDU-Green state gov. drops promise of free daycare meals, but has cash for asylum seekers

The state government of North Rhine-Westphalia has dropped the promise made in its coalition agreement to introduce free meals for all children in daycare centers for the time being, but still has the highest net expenditure of any state on asylum seeker benefits.

In their coalition agreement, the CDU and the Greens committed to working toward free meals in daycare centers, TAG24 reported.

“We aim for free meals in daycare centers and will gradually relieve parents of meal fees depending on their income,” the agreement stated. It also promised to make the third year of kindergarten before starting school free of charge throughout North Rhine-Westphalia.

Nearly half of Germany’s €17.68 billion in housing support for 2024 was paid out to foreigners.

Will NATO survive Trump?

The integrity of the 76-year-old alliance appears in the balance here, but the row over Greenland is a symptom, not the cause.

Today, NATO faces a deep and existential challenge: a fundamental divide between the United States and the alliance’s European members over the type and extent of the threat posed by Russia.

Ultimately, it is this fracture – and not the outcome of the current territorial dispute – that will be the alliance’s undoing.

The core of this transatlantic rupture is simple. While much of Europe is convinced that a future war with Russia is all but inevitable, some parts of Washington and key power centers in the Trump administration increasingly do not see Russia as a conventional military threat to the United States and do not believe that Moscow harbors imperialist intentions toward the rest of Europe.

What do you think? Is war between Russia and NATO inevitable?
