The Swiss National Bank just warned it may SELL stocks - they hold ~$200bn 🚨
In a shock to the market the SNB has hiked rates 50bps for the first time since 2007 but this might not be the most significant development.
The SNB holds ~$177bn of US equities concentrated mainly in FAANG. They are one of the largest holders of Apple, Microsoft and Amazon stock in the world - their top holdings below 👇🏼
The SNB has been diversifying FX reserves into equities and corporate bonds over the years and this trend may stand to reverse after today.
The thinking is that they may dump U.S tech stocks, to raise USD, to buy Swiss Francs to keep CHF stronger. Around 25% of their FX reserves currently sit in equities.
This is a significant, hawkish, change of stance by the SNB.

🇬🇧La #BoE prosegue nella corsa al rialzo dei tassi britannici in funzione anti-inflazione, portandoli - come da attese e seguendo Fed e Bce - dal 4% al 4,25%, con un aumento di un quarto di punto.
Si tratta dell'undicesimo aumento consecutivo in 18 mesi, deciso dal Monetary Policy Committee della banca centrale di Londra.
L'#inflazione nel Regno Unito a febbraio è salita al 10,4% su base annua, sopra le stime che indicavano 9,9%.
🇨🇭Nella sua riunione di marzo, anche la Banca Nazionale Svizzera ha deciso di inasprire la politica monetaria alzando di altri 50 punti base i tassi e portando il tasso di riferimento all’1,5%.
La #SNB ritiene che l’inflazione sia ancora elevata:
«Non si può escludere che ulteriori aumenti del tasso di riferimento della Snb siano necessari per garantire la stabilità dei prezzi nel medio termine», ha spiegato il Comitato di politica monetaria dopo il meeting.
