Berkshire Hathaway is sitting on about $382 billion in cash and Treasuries. That’s the biggest corporate cash reserve in U.S. history.

Why so big?

Berkshire’s businesses keep generating massive profits, and Buffett hasn’t found enough attractive deals. At the same time, he’s been selling stocks for eight straight quarters, including cutting Apple by roughly 75% and trimming Bank of America and others. He also slowed share buybacks.

The reason is simple: valuations look high. Buffett would rather hold cash than overpay.

He’s done this before. Before the dot-com crash. Before the 2008 crisis. Before the 2022 bear market. Each time, he built cash when markets were expensive and deployed it when fear created discounts.

The $382B isn’t hesitation. It’s dry powder.
