A digital driving licence on your phone is not the same thing as a compulsory national Digital ID

However, the Government is connecting digital credentials, the GOV UK Wallet and the One Login app - and something much bigger is starting to take shape

It's not just what each part does TODAY - it's what the combined system could become TOMORROW

We must not let these systems evolve into Digital ID in all but name, through expansion, function creep or the loss of offline alternatives

The surest way to stop One Login becoming the only way to interact with the state is to refuse to let it become the default

Wherever a genuine alternative exists, use it - and demand that government protects that choice in law

Francis Hoar is a leading public and constitutional law barrister with particular expertise in election law, judicial review and civil liberties.

During the Covid period, Francis acted for the claimants in R (Dolan) v Secretary of State, the landmark Court of Appeal challenge to the lawfulness of the first national lockdown, and subsequently worked on legal challenges concerning travel restrictions, mandatory vaccination and child-vaccination policy.

He has also acted in major election cases, including the successful petition that overturned the 2014 election of Lutfur Rahman as Mayor of Tower Hamlets, and remains a prominent advocate for democratic accountability, fundamental freedoms and the rule of law.
