Nationalists have a very bad habit of overcomplicating simple things. I just saw an argument on Youtube over how to define "nationalism."
Here's my simple explanation:
- A nation is not a government (state) or country (territorial region) but a people.
- Nation is synonymous with "ethnic group," which was defined thousands of years ago by Herodotus as "a people united by common blood/descent, language, and culture."
- Nationalism is the political ideology of ethnic self-determination and self-governing.
- This is not the same thing as ethnocentrism, in-group preference, or tribalism.
Take Jews as an example. Zionism is a nationalist movement. Some Jews in the West claim to be anti-Zionist (whether they actually are or not is another question) but still promote politics that favor the group-interests of Jews in the West (e.g. immigration) and act ethnocentrically (see: countless Jewish-exclusive organizations).

Humans are as genetically diverse as many other polytypic species anyway, and "genetic diversity" is completely unrelated to subspecies classification, which is based on phenotype and geographic/ecological isolation.
