Game Theory and Reciprocal Altruism

In game theory, reciprocal altruism refers to a scenario where individuals engage in cooperative behavior, expecting that their kindness will be reciprocated in the future. One of the most famous examples of reciprocal altruism is the Prisoner's Dilemma*, which showcases how cooperation can lead to mutual benefits.

A 'game' like society, where individuals consistently act in a cooperative and altruistic manner is one that is harmonious and stable. With trust and reciprocity individuals collectively benefit from increased cooperation, etc. — i.e. social cohesion.

However, in highly populated and transient environments, like the dense urban centers this tweet was likely sent from, where interactions are infrequent or short-term, building trust becomes more challenging. Not only does this environment create incentives where individuals may prioritize immediate gains over long-term benefits, blacks in general tend to think in these terms regardless, which rapidly erodes reciprocal altruism.

In this game we are in, that is already low trust, with a significant number of individuals who act immorally, the incentive for reciprocal altruism diminishes. When people doubt the likelihood of others reciprocating their kindness, they become less inclined to act morally. This tweet has seeded that doubt in a viral way, or at the minimum showcased the popularity of this attitude on black twitter.
