When Robert Molyneaux created these two Yamnaya reconstructions, I asked him to do one on the lighter end of the scale, and one on the darker end, to reflect the diversity of skin tones found among them. Some people insist that they were "brown" but the truth is that the complexions of WSH fell within the range currently associated with European people. In the infographic you can see that even the fairest region of Europe, Ireland, has many people in the IV range, whereas the V range to which the darkest Yamnaya belonged, exists among native Spaniards. I myself am IV in the summer but no one has ever mistaken me for an Indian!
I've been reading The Son Also Rises, an excellent book on social mobility that's full of useful empirical data. It focuses mostly on the elite and looks at various societies around the world. The section on Communist China was particularly interesting.
I will post/summarize a few sections at some point, but its basic findings were:
1. The heritability of social mobility is around 75% but it's also influenced by random "shock" factors and luck.
2. There is a relatively consistent rate of social mobility across all societies regardless of race, ethnicity, system of governance, and time period.
3. This rate is much slower than previous estimates imply, even for modern societies. Regression to the mean takes many generations, sometimes hundreds of years.
4. "Rags to riches" stories are an extremely rare historical anomaly. "Riches to rags" practically never happens. Rich people become slightly richer, poor slightly poorer.
My only complaint is that the author's final conclusion / proposal was pants on head retarded. After spending hundreds of pages proving that no amount of social revolution or engineering will alter social mobility and that class is highly heritable, citing countless examples, he then essentially argues that we can decrease class disparity by raising taxes and giving poor people more free money.
I couldn't believe what I was reading. Maybe my brain had melted after reading since 9 am. I'll re-read that section later.
