Theory: The elite became "woke" before the masses partly because they experienced relaxed selection pressures first, with greater access to modern medicines etc. Their weaker (i.e. less genetically healthy) offspring were more likely to survive into adulthood and so they accrued higher mutational load earlier than the masses.

Some possible evidence for this is the increased frequency of left-handedness among people of higher socioeconomic status (as documented in this study). Left-handedness is associated with decreased genetic fitness, increased probability of mental and physical illness, and so on.
