Early European Farmers: Very interesting 2021 study on population turnover in central Europe during the Late Neolithic (42 samples)

People of the "Early European Farmer" Wartberg Culture (3500-2800 BC) traced almost half of their ancestry to Western European Hunter-Gatherers, ~46% (or 34-58%) on average. One individual had ~75% WHG ancestry. During the Early Neolithic, the EEF cultures of central Europe (e.g. LBK) had significantly less WHG ancestry (~5%), as did those of the Middle Neolithic (~15%). The Wartberg's extremely high proportion of WHG ancestry implies that it came directly from an unmixed WHG population (i.e. one without EEF ancestry).
All Wartberg men belonged to the WHG Y-DNA haplogroup (male lineage) 'I2', while Wartberg women belonged to a variety of lineages. This is evidence of an ethnic-cleansing-type population turnover, whereby the males of a WHG population invaded and conquered a neighboring EEF population, exterminating the men and intermixing with the women. It's extremely unlikely that such an event would occur without violence, as seen with the Proto-Indo-European invasions (and basically every other population replacement in history).
Finally, the WHG-EEF admixture event that gave rise to the Wartberg population was estimated to have occurred between 3860 and 3550 BC, which aligns with the change in material culture that gave rise to the Wartberg Culture (which began ~3500 BC).
So, in summary:
- Unmixed Western Hunter-Gatherers survived in Europe as late as 3500 BC.
- EEF and WHG did not intermix heavily with one another until the Late Neolithic, at which point there was a big MALE-DRIVEN influx of WHG ancestry into EEF populations (this is a continent-wide trend documented in many studies).
- WHG almost certainly genocided EEF men in this instance, since EEF male lineages were completely extinguished.
It seems that the WHG were in the middle of a continent-wide reconquista against the EEF during the Late Neolithic, which was unfortunately interrupted by the Proto-Indo-Europeans, who conquered the entire continent due to their superior technology, cultural practices, and physical strength.
Well, it's not unfortunate for modern Northern Europeans since we trace over half of our ancestry to the Corded Ware.
