From The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire (1776–1789) by Edward Gibbon:
"The Roman government appeared every day less formidable to its enemies, more odious and oppressive to its subjects. The taxes were multiplied with the public distress; economy was neglected in proportion as it became necessary; and the injustice of the rich shifted the unequal burden from themselves to the people, whom they defrauded of the indulgencies that might sometimes have alleviated their misery. The severe inquisition, which confiscated their goods and tortured their persons, compelled the subjects of Valentinian to prefer the more simple tyranny of the Barbarians, to fly to the woods and mountains, or to embrace the vile and abject condition of mercenary servants. They abjured and abhorred the name of Roman citizens, which had formerly excited the ambition of mankind. The Armorican provinces of Gaul, and the greatest part of Spain, were thrown into a state of disorderly independence, by the confederations of the Bagaudæ; and the Imperial ministers pursued with proscriptive laws, and ineffectual arms, the rebels whom they had made. If all the Barbarian conquerors had been annihilated in the same hour, their total destruction would not have restored the empire of the West; and, if Rome still survived, she survived the loss of freedom, of virtue, and of honour."

Political realignment towards more hardcore anti-immigration stances occurring all over Europe, most recently in Finland:
>Newly elected Finns Party leader Riikka Purra expressed her concern of Finns becoming a minority in parts of Finland and stated that “most Finns don’t like this development. It’s another matter whether they have the courage to say so out loud.”

“Party that won’t tighten immigration policy can’t rule with Finns Party”
Riikka Purra, the new chairperson of the Finns Party, on Sunday indicated that the opposition party will not make compromises on its hardline stance on immigration.

Approximate distribution of Indo-European languages in 500 BC
Taken from this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sMdhcpjNHLk. Some of the timings are a little off (e.g. IE were in Britain and Iberia in 2500 BC, almost 2000 years before they were in Iran) but it's still a cool vid.

"just as he was wondering what omen would present itself, an Ethiopian soldier, who was famous among buffoons and always a notable jester, met him with a garland of cypress-boughs. [...] Severus in a rage ordered that the man be removed from his sight, troubled as he was by the man's ominous colour"

Tocharians: Fascinating update with leaked data from forthcoming paper [Source]
13 samples from Tarim Basin dated 2100-1700 BC, with 5 more from the Dzungarian Basin (immediately north of Tarim) dated 3000-2800 BC.
The population of the Tarim during this time period seems to be predominantly descended from Ancient North Eurasians and West Siberian Hunter-Gatherers. WSHG themselves were 72.5% ANE, 7.5% West European Hunter-Gatherer, and 20% Ancient East Asian.
In layman's terms, this is a very archaic population that seems almost out-of-place for the time period.
The Dzungarians were 55% Afanasievo,35% WSHG, with remaining 10% East Asian & Neolithic Iranian.
Most of these samples predate the earliest Xiaohe Cemetery mummies (commonly identified with Tocharians), which date to 1800 BC.
If real, this study will pose more questions than answers. Need later samples.
My theory is: Dzungarians (who speak Proto-Tocharian) move south, mix with ancient Tarim people. Soon after, Andronovo move into the region.

Empathy is very political in nature. We instinctively show empathy towards our political allies and relish the destruction and suffering of our political enemies. Empathy is probably one of the most "political" emotions, hence why your enemies are always trying to manipulate your empathy towards their own ends, trying to make you feel sorry for out-groups — people who are, by nature, your political enemies.
