Fun Fact:
Today it's an established fact that our skeletons are surprisingly malleable. The pure white remains displayed in museums may seem solid and inert, but the bones beneath our flesh are very much alive – they're actually pink with blood vessels – and they're constantly being broken down and rebuilt.

While they still have a blood supply they are pink.

When operating on living bone you can make them look white by scraping off the surrounding membrane, the periosteum, removing the blood supply to the surface of compact bone beneath. This is the densest, strongest part of a bone & its blood vessels run in relatively small numbers inside it, within Haversian canals, each a cylindrical structure composed of concentric layers of collagen mineralised with calcium hydroxyapatite (one of many possible hydroxylated phosphates of calcium).

When handling a preserved bone, without a blood supply, you see the white of the calcium phosphate tinged with the yellow of dried collagen.
