Although social distancing is necessary during the pandemic, it doesn’t mean you can’t maintain close relational proximity with your mentees.
Use this moment in time to explore new ways of staying connected and challenge yourself to get out of your mentoring comfort zone.

What Will We Keep From This Time?
I can’t wait to say goodbye to this moment, but some things I’ve seen over the past weeks are worth holding onto for tomorrow
Humans of TMC
As we bid farewell to another academic year, we also say goodbye to our 3rd Circle of mentees and mentors who have journeyed with us the past year.
Humans of TMC marks the end of each Circle and we use it to remember the goodness of mentoring and how it has impacted our mentors and mentees.
We will be uploading reflections over the next few weeks that document the happy memories and lessons learnt by our fellow members. Keep a look out and you might see your friends on it!

Humans of TMC
"Sir Isaac Newton once wrote “If I have seen further, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.” This quote is one that suitably sums up my TMC journey in SMU thus far. Being a part of TMC, I had the unique opportunity to join a community of extremely driven individuals that showed constant support for one another..."
- Rayden (Mentee)
"With my sophomore mentee, Rayden, I am proud to be able to give counsel from a senior's perspective. It really is amazing and inspiring to see new SMU juniors do more and more to develop both the individual and community. I am glad to have Rayden as a mentee and a good friend and I do wish for him to exceed even more in his upcoming years in SMU."

Humans of TMC
"So funny story here: I snuck into and attended TMC’s appreciation night a year before I joined the circle to accompany a friend who wanted to drop by. I had the opportunity to listen to Xin Hao’s outgoing speech and was in awe by that man’s dedication to serve members of his circle. Even though I was an outsider back then, I could feel the “warm fuzzies” around the room and had this feeling that TMC was more than just another student club."
- Haris (Mentee)
"I wanted to join TMC as a mentor because I have received a tremendous amount of help and guidance from my own mentor in school. He guided me not only in my academics, but also in my career choices and most importantly in life. He was the kind of mentor I hoped to be, not just to my mentee Haris, but also to the wider community of juniors who are navigating through the uncertainties and challenges of university life, just like I was few years ago."

"A very special shoutout to my mentor Hui Ting, who is both my 2 years senior and a new friend I made through TMC! The first time we opened up to each other was probably at Compass@Campus where we got to know each other on a much deeper level and I am glad that we have grown closer through that opportunity. Seeing Hui Ting also gives me a sense of where I had liked myself to be in 2 years’ time – finding a profession that I have passion in and do well at, settling down with a partner and ready for the next stage of adulthood."
- Christine (Mentee)
"TMC has definitely allowed me to meet like minded people in a safe space where we are all encourage to grow together. Despite being a mentor, I was given the opportunity to be mentored as well through the Compass@Campus event. The efforts that the club puts into making sure every mentee-mentor fit is suitable is commendable. Christine has been a lovely mentee, and always hyping me up and being a bundle of happiness. I’m glad to have found a junior where I am able to impart experiences that have accumulated through the past three years of SMU be it internships or just making friends!"

Humans of TMC
"The friendships and connections I make in SMU are some of my most valuable takeaways from my experience there. Through TMC, I have met with and learned from many generous and inspirational people in the community, allowing me to broaden my perspectives in all areas from academics to career exploration and finding my passions. These people have inspired me to stay curious and open to new ideas, as well as to pay it forward and help others when I have the opportunity to do so."
- Edwin (Mentee)
"TMC is a great community for cross-learning between the mentor and the mentee. I am glad to have Edwin to as my mentee. Edwin is a very driven person with a clear goal in mind. His tenacity to learn more about quantitative finance has inspired me to learn more about it. During the process, we shared resources on quantitative finance such as articles and reports on quantitative finance. As a result, I find that mentoring is a very rewarding process as Edwin’s passion pushes me to learn new things too!"

I was retrenched last November. Here, I would like to share how I went through several difficult months and a silver lining that I found.
I reckoned that I should come up with a plan on how to take things forward. So here was my 3R plan.
Hopefully, this will give you some inspiration and hope in an uncertain time like this.

Humans of TMC
"The most common cynicism of TMC is the credibility of the mentors in the circle (given that mentors are generally only 2 years older than we are). To that I say, boomers are out, and Zoomers are in, so the closeness in age should actually be celebrated. Okay, jokes aside, I genuinely believe that the recency of mentors in the circle makes the relevance of advice and the relatability of experiences that much more valuable. Moreover, there is also an added magnitude of motivation, precisely because these mentors are so similar to you are, in that you have no excuse to give up!"
- Wei Zheng (Mentee)
"My journey as a mentor has been a very rewarding one, as it further reinforced my understanding and belief in mentorship. As a mentor, I was able to give back to the community, especially to my mentee Wei Zheng. Through our catchups and coffee chats, I got to understand his goals and aspirations, which I found to be very similar to mine. I’m thankful for the opportunity to be a mentor to him; Wei Zheng is a very driven individual who seeks excellence, and he inspires me to push my boundaries and strive for new heights."

"Prior to joining TMC, I have had previous mentors that have played a significant role in my life. They gave me valuable and timely advice when I spoke to them. When TMC applications came along, I seized this opportunity to meet a new mentor that will guide me in this phase of life. I am thankful to have Kok Yin as my mentor on this journey. I remember feeling really lost as to which career path I wanted to take at the start of Year 2. However, through sustained conversations with her, I discovered that we share the same passion for the public service and I have never looked back since."
- Jonathan (Mentee)
"In the journey of mentorship, whether as a mentor or mentee, you will realise that you are not walking the journey alone. The relationship of mentor and mentee is often fluid: it is not always the mentee who learns from the mentor but often times, the mentor also learns from his mentee. This is how it is with Jon. We would often share and discuss our learnings together."
- Kok Yin (Mentor)

Having been through freshman year in university, Damian never underestimated the impact of a mentor in pointing one in the right direction when he or she is lost amidst the hustle of school.
In TMC, he had the opportunity to pass on this spirit of mentoring to Ying Ting, who was very uncertain about the industry she wanted to enter or am interested in. However, with hours of patience guidance and sharing by Damian, Ying Ting managed to develop a better understanding of what she should be pursuing.
“Not only is he a great mentor, but also a friend whom I know I can turn to when I need help for anything. No matter how busy he may be, he would always take time off to help me out.”

A mentor is a challenger, connector, cheerleader and a coach. That was what Jolene found in her mentor, Clarice.
"Whenever I was in doubt, she would listen, offering her reassurance and guidance without fail. In areas where she wasn't as familiar with, she would take the initiative to connect me with her seniors."
Whenever opportunities arose, Clarice would constantly challenge Jolene to learn and grow. In TMC, mentors are more than new friends made. A mentor allows you to see the hope inside yourself!

The greatest mentors inspire! We believe that most of our mentors in TMC do inspire and hope to see their mentees grow.
For Marc, Ervin has definitely inspired in him the desire to give back in future. "From coffee chats about life, to checking in on academic studies, Ervin invested his time, energy and wealth of knowledge and I hope to bless someone in the future similarly."
Similarly, Ervin had wonderful friends who made a huge difference in the first two years at SMU. "This personal experience of mine has made me realised the difference a mentor could make in the life of others which motivated me to join The Mentoring Circle."
Pay it forward as a mentor in the next semester of 2020 and see the difference you can make!

TLDR version:
- I interned in Modalku in 2017, didn't regret
- If I was a student today in SG, I'll look into ID extremely seriously
- On top of the Indo wave, the Fintech wave is one of the largest
- Xue Kai is a SGean, set up in TokoCrypto ID in 2018 - he certainly rode the wave
-Attend to learn more about - esp. how Singaporeans can get onboard now
