Devastating Afghanistan Earthquake Leaves At Least 1,000 Dead

After a strong earthquake slammed a mountainous border area of Afghanistan, killing at least 1,000 people, desperate rescuers raced against time and torrential rain on Thursday to retrieve survivors from the ruins. The rocky east, where residents already struggle to make ends meet in the midst of a humanitarian crisis made worse by the Taliban’s takeover in August, was most hit by the 5.9-magnitude earthquake.

Survivors of the Afghanistan earthquake estimate the terrible cost

A tent that was just provided by a former Afghan leader is being put up by Rahmat Gul’s family. In the center of the courtyard of the vacant compound they now call home, it is placed next to another one that was given by the Red Crescent. All of their homes were damaged in the Gayan area of Paktika province, which was near to the core of the strong earthquake that shook southeast Afghanistan earlier this week.
