An Israeli court has extended by two days the detention of two activists from a Gaza-bound aid flotilla, after prosecutors sought a longer extension over security-related allegations.

Lawyers for Thiago de Avila and Saif Abu Keshek say no charges have been filed and described the legal process as "fundamentally flawed and illegal". The two remain under interrogation and are being held in isolation, according to an advocacy group.

The activists were part of the Global Sumud Flotilla, which aimed to deliver humanitarian aid to the besieged Gaza enclave of Palestine. The convoy was illegally intercepted by the Israeli forces near Greece, about 600 nautical miles from its destination.

Israel has maintained a blockade on Gaza since 2007, with the genocidal war since October 2023 causing widespread casualties and destruction across the Palestinian territory.

Francesca Albanese, UN Special Rapporteur on the Occupied Palestinian Territories, warned against the “Israelisation of Europe,” urging states to end military aid to Israel and condemning the attack on a Gaza aid flotilla off Crete during an event in Athens, Greece.

Speaking in solidarity with Palestinians, she said Israel faces accusations of war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide before the ICC and ICJ. She cited an ICJ ruling, urging UN member states not to aid or assist Israel until the occupation ends.

Albanese criticised European governments for continuing trade, arms cooperation and security ties with Israel, while adopting surveillance tools and stricter domestic policies.

She also referred to the interception of the Gaza-bound aid flotilla Sumud near Crete, calling the role of Greek authorities in stopping the mission “wrong”

The US Department of Justice has lost more than a quarter of its lawyers between early 2025 and January 2026, as thousands have quit or been dismissed, according to the Financial Times.

A total of 3,402 lawyers left the department during that period, while 771 joined, resulting in overall legal staffing being significantly reduced compared with the end of 2024.

The Brazilian embassy described what Avila was subjected to as “practices that amount to torture and inhumane treatment,” stressing that such acts are absolutely prohibited under international law, with no political or military justification that could justify them against a detained foreign citizen.
It is worth noting that Thiago Ávila and Saif Abu Kishk are the only two activists still being held in Israeli prisons. The remaining activists confirmed that both were subjected to torture after demanding their release.
