About Basaveshwara (1131β1196 CE):
1. Born in Karnataka; 12th-century philosopher, poet, and social reformer.
2. Also known as Basava or Basavanna; called Bhakti Bhandari (Treasurer of Devotion).
3. Served as Prime Minister in Kalachuri King Bijjala's court.
4. Founded the Lingayat sect, which worships Shiva as the sole deity.
5. Composed Vachanas β poetic verses conveying spiritual and philosophical ideas.
6. Established Anubhava Mantapa β a democratic forum for spiritual and social discourse.
7. Advocated Kayaka β the doctrine of "work is worship" regardless of oneβs profession.
8. Led the Sharana movement, promoting equality and attracting followers from all castes.
