A Serious Man - Review

Every one is acting irrationally.
- His Religion / The Rabbis / The Gett
- The Law
- The Record Club

Our main character is the only rational person (a dumb rational person). The guy doesn't react to anything, he never goes against anything that happens in his life he just accepts it, so in that way it doesn't matter if the universe is fully deterministic or not because he is not exercising his free will. His inaction is an action of acceptance. The guy is just going through the motions. He is not objecting to anything. It's making me angry.

I just remembered the guy is a physics professor 😂. I don't know how that happened he is pretty dumb.

One character says "Mathematics is the art of the possible", which is very wrong.
Mathematics is the only field of study that's completely detached from physical realities, like it has imaginary numbers, infinities, extra dimensions and a whole lot more. Mathematics is not concerned with what is possible, it's a totally abstract notion of analysis.
The main character responds to the statement just by saying "I don't think so". I think this is a failing of the writers, a physics professor wouldn't respond to that statement just by saying "i don't think so".

My definition of "A Serious Man" wouldn't go looking for answers from Rabbis.

Another character says "Hashem hasn't given me shit." - hashem is another manifestation of our anthropocentric ideals. The scene is a good example of the emotions that take us over when we finally realize that we are not impervious to the chaos of the universe, we are a part of it.

Near the ending after the boy's bar mitzvah everything seems like it's going good, things get good with his wife, he will finally get his tenure, he decides to use the bribe money to pay for arthur's legal problem. I think the reason his problems started solving themselves is that the boy's bar mitzvah represents the main character giving in to the irrationalities of life.

Finally when he thinks everything is solved, the real universe walks in and shows us that there's nobody in charge
- He gets a call from his doctor, looks like they found something in his x-ray scan (maybe cancer)
- A tornado appears at the Hebrew school and it looks the boy will die or get severely hurt

"The universe doesn't give a shit about how good you are, if something is going to happen it will happen."
If this was the message the writers were thinking of when they wrote the movies then i guess i like it. But then again the movie didn't really end in the sense that it gave us closure. It just asks question throughout the movie. The ending is achieved not by giving answers to the questions already asked. It is achieved by just stopping the endless stream of questions it is asking.

Conclusion, i don't like the main character at all but i liked the movie.

It would have been more fun if he wrote an article titled "Why I Won't Use Remix"
