Korean population is shrinking!

I was wondering why the spring semester intake this year seems bigger than previous semesters.

Then I checked South Korea’s population trend. The growth rate is negative (around -0.1% to -0.14%). Many kindergartens are already shutting down because there aren’t enough kids.

The same thing is now happening in elementary schools — some can’t even fill one class anymore.

In the near future, this will affect universities across the country too. To maintain enrollment, many universities are starting to attract more international students.

Interestingly, while the population is declining, the number of foreign residents keeps increasing.

So what happens next?

My guess: deeper integration with Korean society. You can already see more international students building their lives here — and many foreigners marrying Koreans.

If you look closely, the shift seems to follow a path: kindergarten → school → university → family.
