I used to be very much against prop representation, as you’d have the risk of some big city candidate that’s just a flunkey for the party leader being parachuted into a rural area and not caring about the local concerns (not that they’re that much better now). I was more a STV proponent, but when they had two referendums on it here in BC, they failed, to a great extent because so many found it difficult to understand how it works (it definitely is a more complicated system). I’m not sure I’d fully agree with this. Liberalism already started before then, such as Locke in England in the late 17th century, and the Jacobins were hardly liberals, they were radicals more akin to the earlier Radical Anabaptists of the 16th century (a rare case where Protestants and Catholics allied together to fight them off) and the Bolsheviks that came later.
Yes, liberalism can ultimately lead to socialism and radicalism in general, but I’d say it’s a stretch to say Robespierre and co were truly liberals, plus the fact as I mentioned, liberalism was already around.
