Yesterday my wife and I drove through one of our fine First Nations’ reserves (Canadian equivalent to the American reservation) and enjoyed the usual spectacle when we noticed something odd. My wife turned to me and said, “I thought it was just the Plains Indians who had teepees, not the coastal tribes?” I agreed and retorted they probably put one up as a way to grift off of unsuspecting tourists who have no knowledge of the differences (mostly anyone from outside North America). Make them think they are noble, nomadic people who are going to smoke the peace pipe, too (there was a legal cannabis store nearby, so they’d likely say it was for such ceremonial purposes).
This just underscores how much these tribal people resort to deception as a way to extract benefits from the outsider, usually white people over the last century plus. Just as they’ll sell salmon out of the back of their pickup to anyone who’ll buy them, after solemnly telling you they needed to fish all of them for ceremonial reasons, they’ll pretend to be a tribe from another region that is more in line with Hollywood’s depiction of the “Injun.” In reality, the tribes of the west coast were more civilzationally advanced relative to their Hunter-gatherer plains cousins, as they had far more available sustenance than them, with a massive abundance of sea food from the Pacific as well as a milder climate that permitted significant growth of wild berries and other edible vegetation.
Contrary to the nomadic, teepee dwelling Plans Indians, the various west coastal tribes had permanent structures, most famously the long house, which also housed a more well developed governmental system within them.
Now, of course, all of these tribal people seem to be plagued by alcoholism (they having less ability to assimilate “fire water” without the negative effects of it), land strewn with an assortment of junk, including old broken down vehicles (sometimes bought with taxpayer money, as an old friend noted how a tribe near where lived were granted a tractor that the government hoped they’d farm with, instead, they got drunk, drove it in everywhere imaginable, crashed it, then left it to rust where it remained months later), eating an excessive amount of junk food (hardly anything nutritious), massive amounts of intra-tribal abuse; gross bodily harm, including murder, and sexual, incest being a major aspect of it (which they’ve done their best to blame whites for), and, of course, grifting.
