我的總結是，speaking generally, 香港學校出的英文閱讀理解題目著重問 what (what is the author saying)， 外國的英文閱讀理解著重問 how (how does the author achieve this or that effect)。
回答how的題目時，香港學生雖然大部分能identify 作者用的修辭，但point out修辭後，經常難以elaborate下去。還有一點，要在GCSE之類的考試拿高分，就要超越average 學生能給的答案。如果只能identify 修辭和簡單地給examples，是不夠的。
那應怎樣提升學生回答閱讀理解題目的能力？我的經驗是，reading 要跟 writing一齊學，越能think like a writer, 就越能從別人的文字觀察出各種細節，做how類型的閱讀理解題目就自然得心應手。//

// 我一直覺得這個經常發生的場面很搞笑：學生家長緊急地email我，說“ 我孩子看不懂English poems，我自己也看不懂，怎麼辦？” 在他們眼中，English poems 跟金字塔內牆上的古埃文沒兩樣，但因國際學校和外國公開試大都要求所有學生分析 poems，所以又不得不嘗試去明白這些意思含糊的東東。
對我來說，讀poems不單不是負擔，能說到我心坎裏的poems，簡直可以充當我人生旅途上的精神伴侶。以我最喜歡的poems之一為例，加拿大詩人Lorna Crozier的 “Packing for the Future: Instructions” ，每當我生活中發生甚麼，Crozier的字句會經常浮現在我腦海中，幫我解讀眼前的人和事。
前幾天，Crozier的字句又浮現在我腦海中。情況是這樣的， 當我的好朋友錢志健公開他跟拍檔羅家聰 “吵架” 片段而成為網民的話題，我沒法不替他難受；他的出發點無非是繼續為香港政治犯發聲，至於他的為人，正如羅博士事後也跟張子君分享， 錢先生在他“ 最艱難的時候幫過他，在相當長的時間，幫我做諮詢有關的東西，所以其實，很多謝他。” 我自己也在最艱難時期得到錢先生的幫助（幾年前我的教學事業剛起步，需要客源）。Crozier的詩的其中一段，正好形容錢先生當時在我人生中扮演的角色：
“Mistrust no one who offers you
Water from a well, a songbird’s feather,
Something that’s been mended twice.

Almost always, 我學生的 Business English 和學生本人，跟王昭君和她的畫像一樣有出入。單看他們的 Business English，還以為他們思路紊亂，見他們本人，原來資歷和上進心俱全。可以想像，如果沒法寫一手好的Business English，要給素未謀面的人留好印象不容易。
我知道不少移了民的香港人要在英語國家重新建立事業不容易，以後我會在這個欄目也多談 Business English topics。//

我之所以喜歡這個故事，是因它能幫我反駁很多在英國讀書的香港孩子對GCSE English 的看法：「讀GCSE English的novels and poems有甚麼用？我今輩子又不是做文學家！」這種眼光可以說跟第一個工人類似。用第三個工人的高度光去看GCSE English, 就能看出，學習文學分析的過程，能培訓一系列的溝通技巧，包括用詞準確的能力，認真地掌握這些技巧，以後在職場上，就能用優雅的英語寫business emails, reports and proposals，跟層次高的老闆和客戶接觸也不怕沒自信，好的工作機會自然更多。//

我之所以喜歡這個故事，是因它能幫我反駁很多在英國讀書的香港孩子對GCSE English 的看法：「讀GCSE English的novels and poems有甚麼用？我今輩子又不是做文學家！」這種眼光可以說跟第一個工人類似。用第三個工人的高度光去看GCSE English, 就能看出，學習文學分析的過程，能培訓一系列的溝通技巧，包括用詞準確的能力，認真地掌握這些技巧，以後在職場上，就能用優雅的英語寫business emails, reports and proposals，跟層次高的老闆和客戶接觸也不怕沒自信，好的工作機會自然更多。//

我學生群中，就有已考了一次但不成功的學生，dream school 給的feedback是 writing and reading 只是average，要above average才行，所以他的父親找上我。學生每次做完作文練習會問我：「以我這個寫作水平，能考入心儀的學校嗎？」，可見他壓力不少。
通常這類學生水平不會太差，他們面對的問題是如何寫出有足夠亮點的文章，讓他們從average applicants中脫穎而出，增加得到學位的機會。
讓自己的文章脫穎而出的秘訣很多，其中一個是在文中引用人盡皆知的名畫。因大家都熟悉名畫裏的畫像，只要把自己文章裏的細節跟畫像聯繫上，就能輕易地寫出精緻的描述...//

Plot twist 的確是很好的寫作工具，因很多時候，學生只注重 be descriptive, 以為similes and alliteration 等修辭用得越多越好，卻不注重構思故事情節。如果學生知道故事尾部要來個Plot twist，在故事構思上自然也會多下功夫，而不是一味沒目標地 be descriptive 下去。//
