【Vanished Voices ・ Stand News|Let it be known that someone stays trying】

There are some Hong Kongers who keep dead news apps on their phones over the past year. Lam Yin-pong, former assignment editor with the now-defunct Stand News, returns to his new office to check on its renovation. It has been a few months since his old employer was raided, closed down and its senior management arrested by the Hong Kong police in December 2021. In April 2022, Lam launched his one-man news online platform. One thing that impresses him is the view from the windows of his new space. “I didn’t realize it when I decided to rent this room. It was only later that I found the windows open right onto the Lion Rock. There is a special meaning about the hill for most Hong Kongers.”

【Vanished Voices・Citizen News|Former reporter Jacky: It’s a luxury to say goodbye】

Ho Ka Tat and Mike have known each other for 14 years. Two photojournalists in Hong Kong, the pair are close as brothers. They have been through the “Umbrella Revolution” in 2014, and the Anti-Extradition Bill Movement in 2019 as comrades armed with cameras working for Apple Daily, documenting the events with tens of thousands of pictures. “It was our fortune to experience those historic moments as Apple Daily journalists,” Mike said, reminiscing the best and the worst of times of their lives.

【Vanished Voices・Apple Daily|Bros of Press Photography Part 2】

It was a cloudy summer day. Journalists from all media establishments in Hong Kong descended upon a corner of Tseung Kwan O where Apple Daily’s headquarters had been situated since 1998. Even citizens from all walks of life hurried here, waving goodbyes to the paper’s staffers within the premise.

The two chummy photojournalists, now apart in two cities, tell their stories of farewell.
