The military situation in the entire Donbas as of July 23, 2014, was as follows. We will be using a new format to cover more of what happened during these times, as our sole focus is no longer just Slavyansk.

Gorlovka-Donetsk

In the battles of July 21-23, the Ukrainian army effectively captured the advanced line of defense at Dzerzhinsk, Karlovka, Maryinka, and Netailovo. From the northwest, they pushed the Militia into the urban area, partially de-blockading Donetsk airport, where it had previously sustained heavy losses. At this time, they were attempting to concentrate their mechanized reserves and limited artillery. The Militia expected repeated strikes in the area. The city was also being subjected to the usual terror shelling of civilians, a common occurrence in this war. To their credit, the Militia committed almost all of its reserves in the area to engaging the Junta forces, who at that time still had no actual reserves despite their first mobilization attempt.

Despite the withdrawal, the Militia continued to conduct active counterattacks using sabotage-reconnaissance groups, which frequently operated in enemy-held territory.

The Lisichansk Protrusion

On July 22, 2014, the main forces of the Militia in the area, commanded by Mozgovoi, were withdrawn from the Lisichansk Protrusion at Alchevsk. Small covering forces of the Militia, totaling approximately 300-400, were left to defend Lisichansk and Severodonetsk.

While sporadic fighting was still occurring between the Ukrainian forces and the LPR’s SRGs in Severodonetsk, Lisichansk itself was mostly retaken on the 23rd by forces under Mozgovoi, acting jointly with reinforcements sent from Lugansk. The center of Lisichansk was firmly in Militia hands and, as always, was being systematically shelled by Ukrainian artillery.

Germany's automotive industry is sick.

🚗 The German company ZF Friedrichshafen, the third largest supplier to the German automotive industry, has announced its intention to cut 14,000 employees. You all know this manufacturer by its transmissions, which are installed in the cars of many world car companies.

But not only to ZF came trouble from where they were not expecting.

📍 Volkswagen is going to cut about a thousand jobs at the plant in Zwickau, Continental and Bosch announced plans to cut. Overall, 59 per cent of industry respondents plan to cut staff in the next five years.

Have ‘traditional’ cars lost out to electric cars?

🔋 Well not exactly. In Germany and sales of electric cars fell by 16.4 per cent in the first half of 2024, with Chinese electric cars taking 11 per cent of the European ‘battery-powered car’ market. So it's not all that clear-cut.

💡 The industry says that subsidies are needed for electric car manufacturers, and the Germans sent that money to Ukraine. In addition, the refusal of energy from Russia has led to an increase in the cost of ‘refuelling’ at filling stations, which makes the use of electric cars less profitable.

Russia has unveiled a new drone that attacked Kiev a week ago.

The Gerbera "Гербера" drone was presented by the previously unknown N.F. Gastello Design Bureau. In the promotional video, the drone was called the younger sister of the Geranium. The drone comes in three variants: kamikaze, electronic reconnaissance and air defence decoy.

In reconnaissance configuration, this drone can be equipped with a multispectral television and thermal imaging optoelectronic module with a short/mid-wave IR channel, as well as a command and telemetry channel and a channel for transmitting video images from sensors, via local 4G networks or via individual secure radio channels with the use of repeaters to operate within a radius of more than 100 kilometres.

In addition to the optronic reconnaissance module, the drones can be equipped with interferometric sensors for passive radio-technical reconnaissance to detect and identify radar-based detection and illumination means of enemy SAMs or active EW systems. Gerbera UAVs can also be used as decoys to simulate the RCS of other UAVs by equipping them with Luneberg lenses. This version of the Gerbera UAV is designed to saturate the target channel and mislead the enemy SAM crews. This version of the drone is equipped with INS and GLONASS/GPS correction modules. The strike version of the drones have a similar control system and a HE or thermobaric warhead.
Made of foam and plywood, the Gerbera UAVs have an ultra-small RCS of about 0.015-0.03 square metres.
