A perfect project plan on paper doesn't guarantee real-world impact, unless it is rooted in solid design and built for real-world adaptability.
We recently wrapped up an insightful session at The Global Health Circle (TGHC) webinar: "Designing Programs that Deliver: A Practical Introduction to Monitoring & Evaluation."
Our expert speakers, Hyeon-Ah Shin and Benjamin Kule, took us on a journey from structural design to ground-level execution. Here are the core takeaways that every public health practitioner and program manager should keep in mind:
1๏ธโฃ The Blueprint: Theory of Change & LogFrames (Hyeon-Ah Shin)
Start with the Problem, Not the Activities: Good projects fail when we jump straight into activities without diagnosing the root causes. Tools like Problem Trees help unpack why an issue exists before writing a single proposal.
Theory of Change vs. Logical Framework: Your Theory of Change (ToC) explains why change is expected to happen (the causal pathway). Your LogFrame translates that theory into actionable architecture, defining what you will do, how you will measure it (Indicators), and where you will verify it (Means of Verification).
The M&E Distinction: Monitoring tells us whether we are doing things right; Evaluation tells us whether we are doing the right things. Good M&E always begins with good program design!
2๏ธโฃ The Realities: Adaptive Management & M&E in Action (Benjamin Kule)
Embracing Ground Realities: Even the best LogFrames encounter unexpected field conditions, shifting community dynamics, and resource constraints.
M&E as a Compass, Not a Script: M&E isn't just a donor reporting requirement, it is a decision-making engine.
Adaptive Management: True impact requires continuously gathering data, reflecting on feedback loops, and having the agility to pivot strategies mid-implementation to achieve intended outcomes.
๐ Building the Future of Global Health Together
At TGHC, our goal is to bridge the gap between academic theory and practical implementation for early-career professionals and students across the globe.
A massive thank you to Hyeon-Ah Shin and Benjamin Kule for sharing their deep expertise, to Wechuli Nafula for hosting a great session, and to every attendee who brought thoughtful questions to the room! ๐

One key lesson Iโm taking away is: *Data is only valuable when it changes decisions.*
Beyond collecting numbers, we need to translate data into clear, actionable insights that answer: *What did we find?* *Why does it matter?* *What should happen next?*
And please, letโs not forget our assignment from the presenter. ๐ On Monday, pick up one report your organisation already produces and ask yourself:
