Every individual deserves access to accurate, science-backed health information.

Decades of data show that when safe abortion care is integrated into public health systems, communities benefit and complications associated with unsafe procedures can be significantly reduced.

Before legal reforms, unsafe procedures were a major contributor to maternal health complications. Expanding access to safe healthcare has since played an important role in protecting the health, well-being, and futures of women and girls.

Under Ethiopia’s Revised Criminal Code, safe and legal abortion care is accessible under specific circumstances.

The integration of these services into the health system means that eligible individuals can seek care from trained healthcare professionals in appropriate health facilities, with confidentiality and safety at the center of service delivery.

As part of our International Youth Day 2026 commemoration, AfriYAN Ethiopia in collaboration with UNFPA Ethiopia and TaYA, recently visited the Association for Women’s Sanctuary and Development (AWSAD) for a solidarity and community service visit.

The visit was an opportunity for young people to move beyond conversations about gender-based violence and express solidarity through compassion, service, and meaningful engagement. We spent time learning from AWSAD’s work, contributing essential items, and creating a supportive and caring space for the women and girls at the shelter, in line with the organization’s safeguarding and confidentiality guidelines.

We remain committed to building a generation of young people who promote dignity, safety, empathy, and communities free from violence and discrimination.

From learning to leading the conversation.

After participating in the orientation on Safe Abortion Care (SAC) and Self-Managed Abortion (SMA), our 25 peer educators took the next step by bringing together fellow peers for peer-to-peer dialogue sessions.

Through these conversations, young people had the opportunity to discuss sensitive issues, ask questions, share perspectives, and engage with accurate information in a respectful and supportive environment.

This is the power of peer education: knowledge does not stop with one person. It is shared, discussed, questioned, and passed on, screating a wider circle of informed young people and more open conversations within the community.

“ፅንስን ማቋረጥ በኢትዮጵያ በሕግ የተፈቀደ ነው?” — መልሱ አዎን፣ በተወሰኑ ሁኔታዎች ነው።

በኢትዮጵያ የወንጀል ሕግ አዋጅ ቁጥር 414/2004 አንቀጽ 551 መሠረት፣ እርግዝና በሕግ በተፈቀዱ ሁኔታዎችና በታወቀ የሕክምና ተቋም ሲቋረጥ በሕግ የሚያስጠይቅ አይደለም።

እነዚህ ሁኔታዎች እርግዝናው በመደፈር ወይም በዘመድ መካከል በተፈጸመ ግብረ ሥጋ ግንኙነት የተከሰተ ከሆነ፣ እርግዝናው በእናት ሕይወት ወይም ጤና ላይ አደጋ ካስከተለ፣ ፅንሱ ከባድና የማይድን የአካል ጉድለት ካለበት፣ ወይም እርጉዟ በእድሜዋ ትንሽነት ወይም በአካላዊና አእምሯዊ ችግር ምክንያት ልጅን ለማሳደግ በአካልና በአእምሮ ብቁ ካልሆነች ያካትታሉ።

ሕጉን ማወቅ ብቻ ጉዳዩን አያበረታታም፤ ትክክለኛ መረጃን ያበረታታል እንጂ። በተለይ በስህተት መረጃና በመገለል የተሞላ ጉዳይ ላይ፣ እውቀት ሰዎችን ከፍርሃት ወደ ትክክለኛ መረጃና ተገቢ የጤና አገልግሎት ያቀርባል።
