🌕🌕🌕🌕🌕🌕🌕🌕🌕🌗

This sensational, colorful, dark-comedy and crime film is written and directed by Quentin Tarantino from a story he conceived with Roger Avary.
It tells four intertwining tales of crime and violence in Los Angeles.

The film stars John Travolta, Samuel L. Jackson, Bruce Willis, Tim Roth, Ving Rhames, and Uma Thurman.

The term of the title refers to the pulp magazines and hard-boiled crime novels popular during the mid-twentieth century, known for their graphic violence and punchy dialogue.

The Writing

I love the nonlinear narrative; it definitely turned a pretty simple plot into an engaging one with exciting storytelling.

The dialogue writing and its unique form, with many of the banters, is one of the film’s biggest defining features. If not all, most of the conversations that take place in this film are both well-written and well-performed, both in the substantial sections and the lighthearted comedic ones.
Truly, the mix of comedy and violence, and the calm and unbothered attitude of the characters towards the berserk subject matter, is what made the film unique.

All the characters are written well, and nearly none are surface-level, and the one single character that was actually shallow (the girlfriend of the Wolf) was used for a clever meta joke: “Just because you are a character doesn't mean you have character.”

Primarily, the characters of Vincent, Jules, and Butch were a blast to follow the stories of, and the interactions between them were endlessly amusing.
I loved pretty much every word out of Samuel L. Jackson's mouth portraying Jules, and his character development was my favorite.

The Acting

The performance of the cast was really good in general. Once again, I absolutely loved the scenes including Vincent and Jules; the chemistry between Sam Jackson and John Travolta is exceptionally palpable.
Samuel L. Jackson is one of my most favored actors; his performance in this film is iconic.

I also mostly enjoyed Bruce Willis’s performance as Butch, even though the “all-American manly tough guy” trope of the ’90s has aged a bit poorly.

The Production

This film has one of the absolute best soundtracks ever; the music choice is phenomenal.
My favorite track is “Misirlou” from the title sequence; it is an utter masterpiece.

Also, the color palettes used for the film are gorgeous; nearly every scene is a joy to experience visually.

The Bad

Amongst the main cast, I didn’t enjoy Uma Thurman's performance as much as the others. Even though she is an instantly recognizable part of the film, it could be due to Tarantino’s lack of skill at writing women, since the other predominant female character, Butch’s wife, was also not very well-written and felt more like a pet than a spouse.

Some of the line deliveries from Ving Rhames, depicting Marsellus Wallace, felt very unnatural at times. Not sure if that’s the fault of the actor or if it stems from the writing, but nevertheless, it does feel as such.

Tarantino’s acting in his cameo is awful (admittedly, in a very funny way) relative to the very talented cast.
He sounds like Patrick Bateman on testosterone blockers.
And also, since he wrote the script, inserting n-words for his own lines is very uncomfortable, especially since it’s pretty unnecessary.

This hundred-minute therapy session is a comedy-drama film directed by Olivia Wilde from a screenplay by Will McCormack and Rashida Jones.

It is an English-language remake of the 2020 Spanish film The People Upstairs (Sentimental) by Cesc Gay.

The film stars Seth Rogen, Wilde, Penélope Cruz, and Edward Norton.

The Writing

The plot in general is very entertaining and delightful. The psychological aspect of it could probably be useful in helping viewers achieve a good definition of what a healthy relationship can and can’t look like, although it definitely is oversimplified.
The tension and lack of comfort built into most scenes has a hypnotic quality to it where it’s both hard to endure and impossible to stop watching.

The dialogue is really well written, and the conversations and arguments between the characters feel very natural.

The comedy aspect is also well done; pretty much most of the jokes or scenes with comedic intent achieve their goal.

The Acting

The performance from our four cast members is generally very good, which is to be expected from four-time Academy Award nominees and one-time winner Edward Norton and Penélope Cruz, respectively.
Olivia Wilde also does a great job as Angela and overall is a rather talented actress.
And lastly, Seth Rogen, who is usually known for his subpar acting in comedy films, does a surprisingly great job. Although it is the case that he is written to “play himself” for a good chunk of the film, he definitely manages to hit the right notes in the more serious scenes.

The Production

The cinematography and editing were quite basic and sufficient; there wasn’t much to be overly impressed by.

The music composed for the film was really great, so much so that it almost felt like the score is a fifth character. It did a very good job of setting the tone of different scenes and helping with the switching of the tone from serious to lighthearted.

The Bad

I didn’t appreciate the exposition dump at the start of the second half of the film. It mostly shed all the good parts of it, like funny dialogue, good music, and camera work, for a good while until it picks up again and switches to its good qualities.

The worst part of this film is one that most modern movies suffer from, and that is the horrible color palette.
Pretty much every scene has the most boring color and lighting possible, and I wish modern movies would stop doing that.

🌕🌕🌕🌕🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑🌑

Pacific Rim is a science-fiction action film directed by Guillermo del Toro.
Set in a future where gigantic creatures known as Kaiju emerge from a breach in the Pacific Ocean, humanity develops massive robotic machines called Jaegers to fight them.
The story follows Raleigh Becket and Mako Mori as they become part of a final mission to prevent humanity's extinction.

What I personally loved about this movie is that it feels like a live-action anime brought to life. The Jaeger vs Kaiju battles are absolutely epic, and every fight carries a sense of scale that very few movies manage to achieve. The soundtrack, visuals, and world-building are all top-notch, but what really stands out is how much fun the movie is from start to finish. It doesn't try to be overly deep or complicated—it simply embraces giant robots fighting giant monsters and executes that idea almost perfectly. Every rewatch feels just as exciting as the first time.

🌕🌕🌕🌕🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑🌑

This gorgeous innovation in 2D animation is a Christmas comedy film co-written, co-produced, and directed by Sergio Pablos.
A traditionally animated film, it stars the voices of Jason Schwartzman, J. K. Simmons, Rashida Jones, Will Sasso and Neda Margrethe Labba.

Serving as an origin story of Santa Claus and using a fictionalized 19th-century setting, the plot revolves around a postman stationed in an island town to the Far North who befriends a reclusive toymaker (Klaus).

The Writing

This aspect of the film was unfortunately the most underwhelming one.

The plot and its structure were extremely typical and predictable, relying on many of the writing tropes common to movies from its era.

The dialogue is well-written. Although it still follows certain tropes, the characterization and the back-and-forth between the characters are very entertaining and nostalgic for those who grew up watching similar animated films.

The Voice Acting

It was generally very good, with every actor presenting a likeable and fitting mannerism for their respective characters. I especially enjoyed the performances of J. K. Simmons and Rashida Jones as Klaus and Alva.

The Animation

This film features a very unique and absolutely gorgeous animation. As mentioned in the introduction, the film was traditionally animated, meaning every scene was achieved with the help of forty animators working on every frame.

However, what makes it unique is that after the 2D animation was completed, they applied shading that achieved a 3D look, giving it a very distinctive and beautiful aesthetic. The animation on Klaus is my favorite aspect of the film.

🌕🌕🌕🌕🌕🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑

This film, being one of the most famous found footage films, is a psychological horror film written, edited, and directed by Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sánchez.

The found footage work is a pseudo-documentary in which three young students (Heather Donahue, Michael C. Williams, and Joshua Leonard) hike into the Appalachian Mountains near Burkittsville, Maryland, to shoot a documentary about a local myth known as the Blair Witch.

The Writing

I enjoyed the plot a lot. Even though at first glance it might seem like there isn’t much to it, the way the story progressed never got boring, and no singular plot point got stretched to the point of exhaustion.

I loved that throughout the progression, the seeds of the future tension between the characters were planted pretty early on by having us see them not being on very similar wavelengths.

The more lighthearted shoots from the first quarter of the film were very fitting and gave the whole plot a much-needed contrast.

The Acting

The general acting is really good, especially since it got a good boost because of the intentional and encouraged improvising prompted by the direction.

The star of the film is obviously Heather Donahue, who managed to play a person who is an antihero, very likable, very annoying, and also simultaneously a person you root for, all in one character.

Michael C. Williams and Joshua Leonard also did a very good job, although I found Mike to be a bit too much at times, which I will get into in The Bad section.

The Production

The direction and choice of format for the cinematography are the main things that make this film great.

The set of decisions made by the directors, both in the making and in the promotion of the film, to create the illusion of realism was exceptional. For example, having the characters named the same as the actors, or instead of scripting dialogue, having outlined plot points where the cast will improvise inside of, and many other choices like these are what make this film feel very realistic and unique.

The way the interview scenes were created, with the interviewees being a mix of planted actors and real residents, was very entertaining.

The Bad

The slow progression with the increasing tension was awesome, but at the 30-minute mark, the increase in tension kind of spiked, with Mike just going somewhat crazy all of a sudden randomly. Even though it’s completely understandable how it could get to that point, I feel like it would’ve been better to show a bit more of the progression.

Overall, Mike felt a bit all over the place with switching the maniac on and off.

I wish we would’ve gotten a bit more visual storytelling. For example, when we find out they’ve walked in a circle and have encountered a log that they previously saw, it would’ve been cool if we saw the log clearly both times so we could also make the connection instead of finding that out through plain dialogue.

Since the interview scenes at the start of the film are supposed to be footage meant for a documentary, it could’ve been more appealing for the cast to use better cinematography, but they mostly just held the camera completely in front of the interviewees.

🌕🌕🌕🌕🌕🌕🌕🌕🌕🌕

This film is an American revisionist Western film written and directed by Quentin Tarantino.
Produced by Tarantino's A Band Apart and Columbia Pictures, it stars Jamie Foxx, Christoph Waltz, Leonardo DiCaprio, Kerry Washington, and Samuel L. Jackson, with Walton Goggins, Dennis Christopher, James Remar, Michael Parks, and Don Johnson in supporting roles.
The film, set in the Antebellum South and Old West, follows the story of an enslaved man who trains under a German bounty hunter with the ultimate goal of reuniting with his wife.

The Writing

The plot was absolutely exhilarating and incredibly entertaining at every point of it.
The dialogue writing was phenomenal. I especially enjoyed the lines for Candie and Stephen and how it exhibited their wickedness.

I have an immense love for the writing of basically every character, from our protagonist to the antagonist to the minor side characters.
All the main characters were written with an astonishing amount of charisma attached to them, even the vile ones. I especially loved and adored the writing of the characters Dr. Schultz, Calvin Candie, and Stephen.

Through their actions, every character's philosophy of life and their qualities are very well demonstrated.
Dr. Schultz, for example, was very well presented as a very intelligent and kind-hearted man, with morals he’s willing to die for. We see his intelligence through very well-structured scenes, like the one where he killed the sheriff for bounty, which was also a great way to contain a good bit of exposition.

The character development of Django was beautiful to see, since he felt like a side character at the start of the film and then began to become the lead role of his own film throughout the progression of the plot.

The comedic writing and its timing are also very on point. My favorite part was the conversation that took place amongst the Klan members. It was very funny in a dark way to see how it demonstrated that people with such heinous views can have weirdly logical banter about the hoods they wear to go kill Black people.

The Acting

The performance of our cast is absolutely top-notch. Enough can’t be said about the amount of talent displayed on this project.
Although I am the farthest thing from an expert on acting, I believe the performances from Christoph Waltz, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Samuel L. Jackson could be examined in the most prestigious academic teachings.

The scenes produced by these exceptional performers are so good that I kept replaying scenes over and over just to see the facial expressions and mannerisms of different actors.

The Production

I loved the cinematography. It had a personality of its own, especially with its fast zooms to close-ups.
It also heavily improved the storytelling by accentuating certain characters at times.

The Bad

The music choice overall wasn’t great. Although I have some favorite scenes where the music improved it a lot, most scenes that used music with lyrics failed at conveying tone.
For example, the hip-hop track used for a portion of the journey to Candyland was very out of place, not fitting for the scene.

The editing of the flashback scenes didn’t feel very well done. It might be a style that is referencing something I’m not aware of, but it doesn’t look very good.

And lastly, some of the special effects were a bit silly. For example, when Lara, Calvin’s sister, gets shot, she swiftly gets pulled in the wrong direction, which was very noticeable and also unnecessary. They could’ve had her simply fall down.

🌕🌕🌕🌕🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑🌑

Ready Player One is a science-fiction adventure film directed by Steven Spielberg and based on the novel by Ernest Cline. Set in the year 2045, the story follows Wade Watts, a teenager who spends most of his time in the OASIS, a massive virtual reality world. When the creator of the OASIS leaves behind a contest that grants ownership of the entire platform, Wade and countless others embark on a high-stakes hunt filled with challenges, secrets, and dangers.

What I loved most about this movie is the insane number of easter eggs and pop-culture references packed into almost every scene. Whether it's movies, cartoons, video games, anime, or classic characters, there's always something exciting to spot in the background. It feels like a celebration of geek culture, and every rewatch reveals references you probably missed the first time. The adventure is fun on its own, but the endless callbacks to beloved franchises are what make the movie amazing.
