π₯Diel Vertical Migration (DVM)
πΊDefinition: DVM is a synchronized movement where deep-sea marine animals, especially tiny free-floating zooplanktons, swim up to the surface at night.
πΊPurpose: It serves as a survival strategy for these creatures, balancing the need for food and avoiding predators.
Mechanism
πΊMovement:
-Organisms rise from the mesopelagic layer (200-1,000 m deep) to the epipelagic layer at night.
-Safety in Darkness: The darkness at the surface provides safety, allowing them to feed on microscopic phytoplankton while avoiding daytime predators.
-Largest Migration: This migration, tuned to sunrise and sunset, is the largest on the planet by biomass and occurs daily in all oceans.
πΊCarbon Sequestration by DVM
-Carbon Removal: Sea animals eat surface plankton, removing ocean carbon.
-Carbon Transfer: They take this carbon deep underwater.
-Carbon Sink: Their waste forms a long-lasting ocean floor carbon trap, aiding climate regulation.

π₯π₯ Planetary Boundaries:
πΊPlanetary boundaries are the thresholds of environmental limits that define a βsafe operating space for humanityβ.
The nine planetary boundaries are:
π₯Biodiversity loss; Land-use change; Climate change; Nitrogen & phosphorus (geochemical) cycles Freshwater use; Ocean acidification; Chemical pollution; Atmospheric loading; Ozone depletion
β Of these 9 planetary boundaries, climate change, biodiversity loss, land-use change, and geochemical cycles have already been exceeded.
