The World Wide Fund for Nature has derived a system called the "Global 200 Ecoregions", the aim of which is to select priority Ecoregions for conservation within each of 14 terrestrial, 3 freshwater, and 4 marine habitat types. National Clean Energy Fund (NCEF) was created(2010-11) out of cess on coal produced /
imported (“polluter pays” principle) for the purposes of financing and promoting clean energy
initiatives, funding research in the area of clean energy or for any other purpose relating thereto.

Subsequently, the scope of the fund has been expanded to include clean environment initiatives
also.

It is now called as National Clean Energy & Environment Fund (NCEEF).

NCEEF allocations have been used to finance multiple schemes such as- Climate Change Action Plan;
National Mission on Himalayan Studies; National Adaptation Fund; National Mission for Green India;
Integrated Development of Wildlife Habitats; Conservation of Natural resources and Ecosystems;
National River Conservation Programme & Namami Gange.
