Teal Carbon

- Teal Carbon refers to carbon stored in freshwater ecosystems, including lakes, rivers, wetlands, and peatlands. It is a subset of carbon sequestration similar to blue carbon (stored in marine ecosystems) but specific to inland freshwater ecosystems.

- Key Sources:
- Wetlands: Wetlands are significant carbon sinks, capturing and storing carbon in vegetation and soil.
- Peatlands: Peatlands (waterlogged areas with accumulated organic matter) are especially important for storing large amounts of carbon over long periods.

- Significance:
- Climate Change Mitigation: Freshwater ecosystems act as important carbon sinks, playing a crucial role in climate change mitigation by capturing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.
- Ecosystem Services: Beyond carbon storage, these ecosystems provide essential services like water filtration, flood control, and biodiversity conservation.
