Ol Doinyo Lengai Volcano

Location: In northern Tanzania, at the southern end of Lake Natron.

Type: Active stratovolcano with unique geological characteristics.

Composition: Contains basalts rich in sodium and potassium, and is so alkaline that its lavas resemble washing soda (Sodium carbonate).

Activity: The volcano has more than one active centre.

Uniqueness:
- It is the only existing volcano on Earth with actively erupting and extremely runny carbonatite magma.
- The magma is saturated with alkali elements, like calcium and sodium, and is poor in silica.

Insolvency and Bankruptcy Board of India (IBBI)

Type: Regulatory body.

Establishment: Constituted in 2016 under the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC), 2016.

Ministry: Functions under the Ministry of Corporate Affairs.

Purpose: To oversee and regulate the insolvency and bankruptcy process for companies, individuals, and partnership firms in India.

Functions:
- Regulation: Regulates the functioning of insolvency professionals, insolvency professional agencies, and information utilities.
- Framework Development: Develops and implements the rules and regulations related to insolvency and bankruptcy resolution.
- Supervision: Supervises insolvency proceedings and ensures compliance with the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code.
- Policy Advisory: Advises the government on matters related to insolvency and bankruptcy law.

Key Initiatives:
- Insolvency Professionals (IPs): Regulates and monitors the conduct of insolvency professionals who manage the resolution process.
- Insolvency Professional Agencies (IPAs): Governs and supervises agencies that enroll and regulate insolvency professionals.
- Information Utilities (IUs): Establishes and oversees information utilities that collect, store, and provide financial information to facilitate the insolvency process.

Composition:
- Chairperson: Appointed by the Central Government.
- Members: Includes representatives from the Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Corporate Affairs, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), and other stakeholders.

Cheque Truncation System (CTS)

Concept: A digital process of clearing cheques without physically moving the cheque from one bank to another.

How It Works:
- Image Capture: The bank captures an electronic image of the cheque along with essential details.
- Transmission: The image and data are securely transmitted to the clearing house.
- Clearing: The clearing house processes the cheque based on the image, speeding up the clearing cycle.

Tungabhadra River

Location: Flows through Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh.It is major tributary of the Krishna River.

Origin: Formed by the confluence of the Tunga and Bhadra rivers, originating in the Western Ghats.

Historical Name: Tungabhadra River was previously known as the Varada River.

- Vijayanagara Empire: Closely associated with the Vijayanagara Empire, with Hampi located on its banks.

- Tungabhadra Dam: Commonly known as Pampa Sagar, this multifunctional dam is located near Hosapete, Ballari district, Karnataka. It was erected by Thirumalai Iyengar in 1953. The dam plays a crucial role in irrigation, water storage, flood control, and hydroelectric power generation.

New Ramsar Sites in India

In News:
Recently, three additional wetlands have been recognized as Ramsar sites

1. Nanjarayan Bird Sanctuary:
Location: Northeastern Uthukuli Taluk, Tiruppur Dist. , TN.
Significance:
- Named after King Nanjarayan.
- Spans two villages, Sarkar Periyapalayam and Neruperichal.

2. Kazhuveli Bird Sanctuary:
Designation: Declared 16th bird sanctuary in TN (2021).
Location: Coromandel Coast in Villupuram Dist, north of Pondicherry.
Ecological Features:
- Significance: Largest wetlands in Peninsular India.
- Migratory Pathway: Lies in the Central Asian Flyway, crucial stopover for migratory birds.

3. Tawa Reservoir:
Location: MP.
Features:
- Size: Largest protected area in the state.
- Construction: Built at the confluence of the Tawa & Denwa rivers.
- Protected Area: Located within Satpura Tiger Reserve, Forms western boundary of Satpura National Park & Bori Wildlife Sanctuary.
