Ballet is the name of a dance technique. Dance works choreographed using this technique are called ballets, and include: the dance itself, the mime, the acting, and the music. Ballets may be performed alone or as part of an opera. Ballet originated in Italy in 1400 and at that time was still a folk dance, where everyone was allowed to participate or dance together. The word "ballet" itself comes from the word "ballo" which then develops into "ballotte" which means "to dance" {to dance}

Ballet has its roots in the meeting of Italian nobles during the Enlightenment. Furthermore, ballet was developed into the ballet de cour, which is a social dance performed with music, speeches, poetry, singing, decorations, and costumes by French aristocrats. Ballet then developed as a separate art form in France during the reign of King Louise XIV—who really loved dance and was determined to improve the quality of dance at that time. The king founded the Académie Royale de Danse in 1661, and in the same year, the comedy ballet by Jean-Baptist Lully was performed. The early form of ballet was a stage art in which the scenes were dances. Lully then studied opera ballet and founded a school to educate professional ballet dancers associated with the Académie Royale de Musique. At the school, the education system is based on noble manners. The 18th century was a period in which ballet's technical standards greatly advanced. It was also during this time that ballet became a serious form of dramatic art and was on a par with opera. This progress was due to the important work of Jean-Georges Noverre entitled Lettres sur la danse et les ballets (1760), which pioneered the development of ballet d'action where dancers are required to express character and present story narration. Ballet music itself developed very rapidly at that time by composers such as Christopher Gluck. At the end of that period, opera was divided into three formal techniques, namely sérieux, demi-caractère and comique, and ballet became part of the opera as an introduction to a scene which is termed divertissements.
