Project Salmon and Project Sterling were part of a series of underground nuclear tests conducted in Mississippi in 1964 and 1966 as part of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission’s Vela Uniform program, which aimed to improve seismic detection of underground nuclear detonations. Carried out in the Tatum Salt Dome near Hattiesburg, Mississippi, Project Salmon involved the detonation of a 5.3-kiloton nuclear device in October 1964, while Project Sterling, conducted in December 1966, used a smaller nuclear device in the same cavity left by Salmon to study seismic decoupling. These were the only nuclear explosions ever conducted east of the Rocky Mountains and caused significant local concern due to radiation fears and ground shaking. Although the site was later decontaminated, it remains a symbol of Cold War secrecy and the controversial domestic legacy of nuclear testing.

Sonderkommando „Elbe“
Ramming fighters were the pilots of the German Reich Air Defense Force during World War II. Starting in 1944/45, as part of the "Elbe" Special Commando, they deliberately rammed enemy terror aircraft with their aircraft to prevent them from dropping their bombs on German cities. These missions were not kamikaze missions; instead, the pilots escaped by parachuting shortly before being successfully rammed.
In Wienhausen-Bockelskamp near Celle, there is a memorial stone for the fallen members of the "Elbe" Special Commando and the "Bienenstock" Special Commando, erected by former members of the commandos.

Aleksander Doba, a Polish adventurer, kayaked solo across the Atlantic Ocean three times, defying age and nature’s challenges. His first crossing in 2010, from Senegal to Brazil, took 99 days. In 2013, he paddled from North America to Europe, and in 2017, at 70, he completed his final transatlantic journey. Each trip showcased his resilience, navigating treacherous waves and storms in a custom kayak, earning global admiration.
In 2021, Doba, aged 74, died while climbing Mount Kilimanjaro. After summiting, he requested a two-minute break before a photo. Sitting on a rock, he peacefully “fell asleep,” passing away.
