It was reported that a man advised the Caliph al-Ma'mūn in a harsh abusive way. The Caliph said to the man, 'Allāh has sent someone better than you to advise someone who is more evil than me, Allāh said to Moses and Harun,

فَقُولَا لَهُۥ قَوْلًا لَّيِّنًا لَّعَلَّهُۥ يَتَذَكَّرُ أَوْ يَخْشَىٰ (٤٤)

"And speak to him (Pharaoh) with gentle speech that perhaps he may be reminded or fear [Allah]."⁶

It is also important to differentiate between someone whose intention it is to advise (nasīhah) and someone whose intention it is to shame (fadīlah). And no one confuses one of these with the other, except someone who does not possess sound intellect.

Shurayh al-Qaadee *rahimahullah Ta'ala) who said: "Indeed I am afflicted with a misfortune and I thank Allah, I thank Allah that it wasn't a greater calamity, I thank Him for providing me with patience upon it, I thank Him for granting me success to say: Indeed we belong to Allãh and onto Him, we will return, for the reward I hope from it, and I thank him for it not being a calamity in my religion." [as-Siyar (vol. 4/ pg. 105)]

THE LIAR VS THE TRUTHFUL PERSON

Allāh punishes the liar by deterring and discouraging him from things which are beneficial and advantageous for him. He rewards the truthful by granting him success to carry out what is beneficial for him in this life and the Hereafter.

Nothing brings about benefit as it relates to this world and the Hereafter like truthfulness, and [nothing brings about] corruption and harm like lying.
