Everyone gon hate me for saying this, but I wished someone told me this when I was in y1 (am in y2 now):

1) Its not true that y1s cannot get good internships without nepo. If the definition of “good” means investment banking or consulting or tech internships, then the answer is to get a high gpa, grind technical questions and spam apply to every firm out there. With enough perseverance, it can be done. Numerous people without acad clubs have done it before and its 100% doable.

2) Yall might also be suprised by how beuracratic and toxic some of these ocs can be. I was part of one and I really didn’t enjoy it. Its perfectly fine if yall want to join to experience some fun, but its still best to not make it the focus of your summer and also pick up some skills on the side

Lastly, I would like to end off by saying that the compounding effect is real. I really do not wish to scare anyone but more people are coming into uni with stacked portfolios, multiple internships and interview readiness. The earlier you get your first internship, the more leverage you get in your subsequent years regardless of which field you pursue. I really hope everyone understands that there is a trade-off in everything you do

(Sorry if it comes across too ominous, but the job market is truly in a very dire state right now - am a y2 and sent out over a hundred apps with single digit response and that is after having some relevant exp on my portfolio)
