We’ve just upgraded our transcripts to be more than just text.

Every episode now includes two major tools to help you master your IELTS Speaking exam:

🧠 Deep-Dive Model Answer Breakdowns (Insights): We’ve taken the verbal tips from the show and turned them into precise, written strategic blueprints. See the exact "hidden mechanics" of Rory’s answersβ€”like why choosing "tall" vs. "high" for buildings is the secret to native-like fluency.

πŸ’‘ 10 Fresh Exam Ideas Per Topic: Never run out of things to say again. For every episode, we now provide 10 unique angles and arguments you can use to personalize your own responses.

Check them out for yourself and let us know what you think!

P.S.

You can also mark episodes as "done" by clicking the tick icon next to the close button. It’s the easiest way to see exactly which topics you've conquered and which ones still need work.

The funny thing is, everything that Maria and Rory have been talking about over the past few years β€” question tags, binomials, intonation, idioms, phrasal verbs, lying to the examiner, making up stories, adding details, etc. β€” actually does give you a higher score πŸ˜†

And now you have a way to practice all that whenever you feel like it πŸ€“

Go try it for yourself!

What idioms to use in speaking?

Start with phrasal verbs! They sound incredibly natural and are usually much easier to master than traditional idioms.

πŸ™ŒπŸ» Band 8-9 Phrasal Verbs

To boil down to something – To be the main or most important result or feature of something.

"You need to boil it down to the main features."
"You should boil the report down to one page."

To cave in (to something) – To finally agree to demands that you originally opposed because you are tired or frightened.

"I finally caved in to your demands to take the IELTS."

To nod off – To fall asleep, especially unintentionally.

"I nodded off during the opera."

To get hooked on something – To become addicted to or captivated by something.

"I got hooked on squash."
"I got hooked on doing yoga."

To come across – To behave in a way that gives people a certain impression of you.

"She comes across as incredibly smart."
"He comes across as a highly responsible person."

To faff about/around (UK) – To spend your time doing unimportant things instead of what you should be doing.

"I was faffing about all day."
"I wish you'd stop faffing around and do something useful."
