Wish/ I wish (์ / ์ ์ผ๋ฉด ์ข๊ฒ ๋ค.)
Used to express desire, hope, or wish. Notice that the past tense conjugation is used before ๋ฉด and the future tense conjugation is used on ์ข๋ค. With these conjugations, it looks like sentences using this form should be translated to "It would be good if X happened".

-(์ผ) ๋๊น
In this lesson, you will learn how to use ~(์ผ)๋๊น and ~(์ผ)๋ between two clauses to create a meaning that is similar to ~์/์ด์. Of course, just like every other grammatical principle, there are some subtle nuances that you should know about. Letโs get started.
Because of: ~(์ผ)๋๊น
In Lesson 37 you learned that you can place ~์/์ด์ between two clauses to create the meaning of โbecause,โ โsoโ or โtherefore.โ For example:
์ ๊ฐ ๋ฐฐ๊ฐ ์ ๊ณ ํ์ ๋ ๋จน๊ธฐ ์ซ์ด์.
Jega baega an gopaseo deo meoggi silh-eoyo.
I donโt want to eat anymore because I am full.
์ํ์ ๋ชป ๋ด์ ์ธ๊ณ ์ถ์ด์.
siheom-eul mos bwaseo ulgo sipeoyo.
I want to cry because I did poorly on the exam.
You can also place ~(์ผ)๋๊น between clauses to create a very similar meaning. For example:
์ ๊ฐ ๋ฐฐ๊ฐ ์ ๊ณ ํ๋๊น ๋ ๋จน๊ธฐ ์ซ์ด์.
Jega baega an gopeunigga deo meoggi silheoyo.
I donโt want to eat anymore because I am full.
The subtle difference between these two grammatical principles is that ~(์ผ)๋๊น is commonly used when the first clause is an excuse as to why the second clause occurs (usually an excuse as to why something canโt be done). As such, sometimes there is the slight feeling that the speaker is annoyed at the cause for something not happening. For example:
ํ๊ต์ ๊ฐ์ผ ๋๋๊น ์ง๊ธ ๋ชป ๋ง๋์.
hagyo-e gaya dwinigga jigeum mos mannayo.
I need to go to school, so I wonโt be able to meet.
์๋ฐฉ์ด ์์ฃผ ์๋๋ฌ์ฐ๋๊น ์ ๋ ์ ์ ๋ชป ์ค์ด์.
yeopbang-i aju siggeuleowonigga jeoneun jam-meul mos jass-eoyo.
The room next to us is very loud, so I couldnโt sleep.
Unlike ~ ์/์ด์, the clause preceding ~(์ผ)๋๊น can be conjugated into the past tense. For example:
์ด์ ๋๋ฌด ๋ฐ๋นด์ผ๋๊น ๋ชป ๊ฐ์ด์.
eoje neomu babbaseunigga mos gasseoyo.
I couldnโt go yesterday because I was so busy.
๋๋ฅผ ์ข์ํ์ง ์์์ผ๋๊น ํค์ด์ก์ด.
neoleul joh-ahaji anhasseunigga he-eojyeosseo.
I broke up with you because I didnโt like you.
It is also common to end a sentence with ~(์ผ)๋๊น. This is similar to ending a sentence with โ~์/์ด์,โ in that the speaker is actually creating an incomplete sentence where the end of the sentence can be assumed from context. In practice, this is typically used to answer a question, where the answer starts with โbecauseโฆโ For example:
Person 1: ์ง๊ธ ๋ง๋ ์ ์์ด์?
Can you meet now?
Person 2: ์๋์~ ๋ชป ๋ง๋์. ํ๊ต์ ๊ฐ์ผ ๋๋๊น์
No, because I have to go to school
Person 1: ๊ทธ๊ฒ์ ์ด ๊ฑฐ์ผ? = Are you going to buy that?
Person 2: ์๋์~ ๋ชป ์ฌ์. ๋์ด ์์ผ๋๊น์ = โฆ No, because I have no money
Person 1: ๋๋ ์ ํค์ด์ก์ด? = Why did you break up with me?
Person 2: ๋๋ฅผ ์ข์ํ์ง ์์์ผ๋๊น = โฆ Because I didnโt like you
Person 1: ์ ๋ฐ์ด ์ ๋ฒ๊ฒผ์ด์? = Why did your shoe come off?
Person 2: ๋งค๋ญ์ด ๋๋ฌด ๋์จํ๋๊น = โฆ Because the knot was too loose
Notice here that you can add โ~์โ to end of โ~(์ผ)๋๊น.โ Similar to when ~๋๋ฐ is used at the end of a sentence (as you learned in Lesson 77), using ~(์ผ)๋๊น like this can be seen as a little bit rude โ even if you attach ~์ to the end of it. Like ~๋๋ฐ, there is the feeling that the person is talking back. Of course, this all depends on the situation and the atmosphere of the conversation.
I said earlier that โ~(์ผ)๋๊นโ is commonly used instead of using โ~์/์ด์โ when the first clause is an excuse to why the second clause canโt happen. I feel that this is true most of the time, although it doesnโt always have to be an excuse. For example:
์ ๊ฐ ์์ ๋ฅผ ๋ค ํ์ผ๋๊น ์ด์ ์ํ๋ฅผ ๋ณผ ์ ์์ด์.

Because/Therefore: V/A + ~์/์ด์
~์/์ด์ is added to the stem of a verb or adjective in a clause to connect it with the upcoming clause. First, letโs look at how โbecauseโ sentences are formed in English. When saying a sentence with โbecause,โ there are two clauses:
I want to eat
I am hungry
Both are independent clauses that can be sentences on their own. However, if we insert โbecauseโ between the two, we can create a sentence with two clauses:
I want to eat because I am hungry
The hardest part about saying these sentences in Korean is that the order is reversed. So, instead of saying:
I want to eat because I am hungry
I want to go to the park because I am bored
In Korean, we say:
Because I am hungry, I want to eat
Because I am bored, I want to go to the park
Now letโs look at these simple sentences in Korean. We have our two clauses again:
์ ๋ ๋ฐฅ์ ๋จน๊ณ ์ถ์ด์
jeoneun bab-eul meog-go sip-eo-yo.
I want to eat.
์ ๋ ๋ฐฐ๊ณ ํ์
jeoneun baegopayo.
I am hungry.
Same as in English; both are independent clauses and can be sentences on their own. However, by inserting ~์/์ด์ between the two, we can create the meaning of โbecause.โ For example:
์ ๋ ๋ฐฐ๊ณ ํ(+~์/์ด์) ์ ๋ ๋ฐฅ์ ๋จน๊ณ ์ถ์ด์
jeoneun baegopeu (+~a/eoseo) jeoneun bab-eul meoggo sipeoyo.
Example :
์ ๊ฐ ๋ฐฐ๊ณ ํ(์) ์ ๋ ๋ฐฅ์ ๋จน๊ณ ์ถ์ด์
jega baegopa(seo) jeoneun bab-eul meoggo sipeoyo.

์ ๊ฐ ๋ฐฐ๊ณ ํ(์) ์ ๊ฐ ๋ฐฅ์ ๋จน๊ณ ์ถ์ด์
jega baegopa(seo) jega bab-eul meoggo sipeoyo.
Because I am hungry, I want to eat.
Remember that ~์ด/๊ฐ should be added to the subject of any clause that is not the main clause of a sentence. ~๋/์ or ~์ด/๊ฐ can be added to the subject of the main clause of the sentence, depending on the specific meaning you are trying to create (although they both essentially have the same meaning).

~์/์ด์ in the Past Tense
You cant conjugate a word into the past tense and then use ~์/์ด์. For example, the following is incorrect:
์ ๋ ๋ฐฐ๊ณ ํ (์์) ๋ฐฅ์ ๋จน์์ด์
jeoneun baegopass(aseo) bab-eul meog-eosseoyo.
I was hungry so I ate.
Instead, the tense of the first clause is inferred from the context of the sentence. For example:
์ ๋ ๋ฐฐ๊ณ ํ์ ๋ฐฅ์ ๋จน์์ด์
jeoneun baegopaseo bab-eul meogeosseoyo.
I was hungry, so I ate.
Notice that this sentence wouldnโt make sense if it were โI am hungry, so I ate.โ
The final clause of the sentence doesnโt necessarily need to be in the past tense in order to suggest that the first clause is in the past. For example, notice how the final clause below is in the present tense, but the first clause is in the past tense:
์ ์ฌ์ ์ ๋จน์ด์ ์ง๊ธ ๋จน๊ณ ์์ด์
jeomsim-eul an meogeoseo jigeum meoggo isseoyo.
I didnโt eat lunch, so Iโm eating now.
Notice that this sentence wouldnโt make sense if it were โIโm not eating lunch so Iโm eating now.โ
Also, it is possible that the final clause of the sentence be in the future tense to suggest that the first clause is in the past tense. For example:
๊ฑฐ๊ธฐ์ ์ ๊ฐ ๋ด์ ๋ด์ผ ๊ฐ ๊ฑฐ์์
geogi-e an ga bwaseo naeil gal geoyeyo.
I havenโt been there yet, so I will go tomorrow.

Adding ~์/์ด์ to ์ด๋ค
When adding ~์/์ด์ to ์ด๋ค, the same principle as before applies. Again, letโs look at two clauses:
I want to go to the park.
์ ๋ ๊ณต์์ ๊ฐ๊ณ ์ถ์ด์.
jeoneun gongwon-e gago sipeoyo.
It is Sunday.
์ผ์์ผ์ด๋ค.
ilyo-il-i-da.
Again, both are independent clauses that can be sentences on their own. However, if we insert โbecauseโ between the two clauses, we can make:
I want to go to the park because it is Sunday
Which, in Korean, would be written as:
์ผ์์ผ์ด๋ค (+ ~์/์ด์) ์ ๋ ๊ณต์์ ๊ฐ๊ณ ์ถ์ด์
ilyo-il-ida (+ ~a/eoseo) jeoneun gongwon-e gago sipeoyo.
Which is done like this:
์ผ์์ผ์ด์ด์ ์ ๋ ๊ณต์์ ๊ฐ๊ณ ์ถ์ด์
ilyo-il-idaseo jeoneun gongwon-e gago sipeoyo.
It is Sunday, so I want to go to the park.
~์ด์ is always added to ์ด๋ค and never ~์์ because the last vowel of the stem of ์ด๋ค will always be โ์ด.โ So, for example:
์ผ์์ผ์ด์ด์ il-yo il-i-eoseo = On Sunday
๊ฑด๋ฌผ์ด์ด์ geonmul-i-eoseo = Building
๊ณต์์ด์ด์ gonwon-i-eoseo = Park
์์ฌ์ด์ด์ wisa-i-eoseo = Being a Doctor
์ฌ์์ด์ด์ yeoja-i-eoseo = Being a Woman
๋จ์์ด์ด์ namja-i-eoseo = Being a Man
When the word ์ด๋ค is attached to ends in a vowel (like in ์์ฌ, ์ฌ์ and ๋จ์) ์ด and ์ด can merge to form ์ฌ. For example:
์์ฌ์ฌ์ wisa-yeoseo = Being a Doctor
์ฌ์์ฌ์ yeoja-yeoseo = Because its a woman
๋จ์์ฌ์ namja-yeoseo = Being a Man
There is a difference simply because of ease of pronunciation. If you were to say โ์ผ์์ผ์ฌ์โ it is hard to pronounce because your tongue has to move from the ใน sound to the ์ฌ sound right away.
Adding ~์ด๋ผ(์) or ~๋ผ(์) has the exact same meaning of ~์ด์ด์ and ~์ฌ์ respectively. That is, you can add ~์ด๋ผ(์) to nouns ending in a consonant and ๋ผ(์) to nouns ending in a vowel. Both are possible, but I find that ~(์ด)๋ผ(์) is used more often in speech (not to say that it is not used in writing โ but when speaking, ~(์ด)๋ผ์ is more common than ~์ด์ด์ or ~์ฌ์). To me, ~(์ด)๋ผ์ just flows off my tongue better.
For example:
์ผ์์ผ์ด์ด์ ๊ณต์์ ๊ฐ๊ณ ์ถ์ด์.
ilyo-il-idaseo gongwon-e gago sipeoyo.
It is Sunday, so I want to go to the park.
