“Long live independent Turkey. Long live Marxism-Leninism. Long live the brotherhood of the Turkish and Kurdish peoples. Long live the workers and peasants. Down with imperialism.”

The last words of Kurdish revolutionary Deniz Gezmiş who was hanged along with his comrades Hüseyin İnan and Yusuf Aslan on May 6, 1972.

I am reposting this article from 2019 which proved somewhat controversial at the time, with one of the organisations that claims a lineage from Gezmiş calling for me to be sacked from my post at the newspaper, making a number of erroneous and inaccurate claims about what I had written.

“Even basic tasks like getting groceries has become dangerous in Donetsk”

My report from the ground soon after Ukrainian forces shelled a residential area in Yasinovataya, wounding four people, one who was left fighting for his life.

Military investigators told us that it was the first time that a Turkish-made Multiple Launch Rocket System was used against civilians.

For anybody who believes the Western narrative on Ukraine I urge them to spend just one night in Donetsk, speak to the people that have endured daily shelling for the past nine years, listen to the sound of Ukrainian rockets being fired, see the destruction of homes, the shelling of children’s playgrounds and hospitals and see the truth that is being manipulated or hidden from them and see if they would still say that Russia was unprovoked.
