INDIA–NEW ZEALAND FTA TO COME INTO FORCE FROM OCTOBER 20, 2026
🔹 Implementation: India–New Zealand Free Trade Agreement (FTA) will come into force from 20 October 2026. It was signed on 27 April 2026 in New Delhi.
🔹 Duty-Free Access: 100% of Indian exports to New Zealand will receive zero-duty access from day one.
🔹 Key Beneficiaries: Major sectors include textiles, apparel, leather, footwear, engineering goods, pharmaceuticals and processed foods.
🔹 Investment Commitment: New Zealand has committed to facilitate US$20 billion investment in India over 15 years, covering areas such as agriculture, manufacturing, infrastructure, startups and emerging technologies.
🔹 India’s Market Access: India has offered access to 70.03% of tariff lines, while 29.97% remain excluded, including sensitive dairy and agricultural products.
🔹 Phased Tariff Elimination: About 35.6% of tariff lines will see duty elimination over 3, 5, 7 and 10 years, while around 30% receive immediate elimination.
🔹 Services & Mobility: The agreement provides opportunities across 118 services sectors, along with a dedicated quota of 5,000 Temporary Employment Entry visas for skilled Indians and 1,000 Working Holiday visas annually.
🔹 Student Mobility: Indian STEM graduates can receive post-study work rights of up to 3 years, while doctoral scholars can receive up to 4 years.
🔹 Safeguarding Agriculture: India has excluded sensitive products such as dairy, onions, sugar and several agricultural commodities from tariff concessions.
🔹 Significance: The FTA aims to expand trade, investment, services, employment, technology cooperation and professional mobility between India and New Zealand.

GAGANYAAN CREW MODULE: HOW WILL ITS PARACHUTE SYSTEM WORK?
🔹 Need for Parachutes: Gaganyaan’s crew module uses parachutes as an additional deceleration and safe-landing system after atmospheric drag reduces most of its velocity.
🔹 Three-Stage Parachute System: The system uses pilot, drogue and main parachutes to progressively reduce the crew module’s speed.
🔹 Pilot Chutes: Small pilot parachutes are deployed first to initiate and control the deployment of the larger parachutes.
🔹 Drogue Chutes: Drogue parachutes are deployed early during descent to stabilise the crew module and reduce its velocity before the main parachutes open.
🔹 Main Chutes: Three main parachutes provide the final deceleration needed for a gentle touchdown on land or sea.
🔹 Multi-Stage Deployment: Staged deployment prevents a sudden opening shock. Increasing the parachute size progressively keeps dynamic pressure within acceptable limits.
🔹 Wake Management: Because the blunt crew module creates turbulence behind it, the parachutes are ejected through the wake using mechanisms designed to ensure rapid deployment.
🔹 Redundancy: Gaganyaan has two drogue chutes and three main chutes. If one main parachute develops an anomaly, the remaining independent systems can support a safe touchdown.
🔹 Parachute Release: After splashdown or soft landing, the parachute can be detached using pyro-cutters or mechanical quick-release devices to prevent wind from dragging the module.
🔹 Testing: Parachutes are tested using rail-track rocket sleds, helicopters/aircraft and rocket-powered test vehicles. The Terminal Ballistic Research Laboratory (TBRL), Chandigarh, has a state-of-the-art facility for such testing.
🔹 Materials: Aerospace parachutes use high-performance synthetic materials. Kevlar is used for high-load suspension lines and reinforcement, while Nomex provides heat and flame resistance. Nylon is widely used for canopy fabric because of its elasticity and compact packing.
🔹 Developing Agency: ADRDE, Agra, under the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), is responsible for developing the parachute systems.
🔹 Key Point for Exams: The Gaganyaan crew-module recovery system combines multi-stage deployment + redundancy + high-performance materials to ensure controlled deceleration and crew safety

NEW BOLIVIAN TIGER CAT SPECIES IDENTIFIED AFTER MORE THAN A CENTURY
🔹 New Species: Researchers have identified a previously unknown tiger cat species in Bolivia, named Leopardus tigrillo.
🔹 Local Name: The cat is called Tilcayo by local communities and inhabits the Yungas forests of Bolivia.
🔹 Physical Features: It is about 46 cm long and weighs around 1.4 kg, making it slightly smaller than an average domestic cat.
🔹 Habitat: Tilcayo is found in the mountainous Yungas region, characterised by high humidity and cloud-covered forests.
🔹 Genetic Evidence: Researchers analysed DNA from 38 cats across South America and found that tiger cats actually comprise five genetically distinct species.
🔹 Evolutionary Divergence: Genetic analysis indicates that Tilcayo separated from other tiger cats around 1.4 million years ago.
🔹 Scientific Significance: The discovery challenges the earlier assumption that tiger cats represented a single species and highlights the importance of genetic analysis in identifying cryptic species.
🔹 Cryptic Species: Tiger cats are called cryptic species because closely related species may look very similar but are genetically distinct.
🔹 Conservation Status: The IUCN Red List currently treats tiger cats as “Vulnerable”, with populations declining.
