A day after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Chinese President Xi Jinping held a brief informal talk on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in Bali, Indonesia, Xi upbraided Trudeau, complaining that everything the leaders had discussed was leaked to the media. "That’s not appropriate," Xi said. "If there is sincerity on your part, we can conduct very good communications based on mutual respect. Otherwise, what might happen is hard to say." Xi's 10 years as China's top leader has fostered a blunt approach to the world known as "wolf warrior" diplomacy.

中國前國家主席江澤民於11月29日去世，享年96歲。儘管他1993年至2003年的任期是天安門鎮壓後經濟快速增長和開放的時期，他也並不是特別受歡迎。但回想起來，與現任領導人習近平相比，他看起來要好得多，後者在很大程度上中斷了市場改革，轉而支持國家控制，並且比他的前任更嚴厲地施政。江澤民去世的時間對習近平來說非常尷尬，他正面對國內廣泛的抗議活動，包括要求他為嚴苛的防控措施下台。

Former Chinese President Jiang Zemin, who died on Nov. 29 at the age of 96, was not particularly popular during his 1993-2003 tenure, even though it was a time of fast economic growth and opening up after the Tiananmen crackdown. But he is looking better in retrospect compared to current leader Xi Jinping, who has largely put the breaks on market reforms in favor of state control and has governed with greater repression than his recent predecessors. The timing of Jiang's death is immensely awkward for Xi, who is facing down widespread protests that have included calls for his ouster over his harsh COVID restrictions.

Volkswagen is facing fresh questions about its operations in Xinjiang, after an executive visited the northwestern Chinese region to try to allay concerns that Uyghurs and other Turkic Muslims are subject to forced labor and other abuses under harsh government assimilation policies. The German carmaker's China chief said he saw no human rights violations at the 10-year-old Urumqi plant, while the company has said that forced labor of Uyghurs is not part of its supply chain.
