Dexamethasone emerges as first Covid-19 life-saving drug

Why in the news-In a major breakthrough in Covid-19 treatment, scientists in the UK have claimed that the generic steroid drug dexamethasone reduced deaths by up to one third in severely ill hospitalised patients.

●The results are a part of the UK-based RECOVERY trial, one of the world’s most extensive randomised trials of drugs to treat COVID-19 patients.

What is dexamethasone?

◆Dexamethasone is a generic steroid widely used in other diseases to reduce inflammation.

◆The drug helps stop some of the damage that can happen when the body’s immune system goes into overdrive as it tries to fight off coronavirus.

◆It is used to treat a range of diseases, including rheumatism, asthma, allergies, and even to help cancer patients better handle nausea triggered by chemotherapy.

IAF Sukhoi-30 MKIs get big firepower! BrahMos air version can now be used in combat; gets critical certification

●Amidst the ongoing tensions between India and China, the Indo-Russian BrahMos air-launched cruise missile (ALCM) has received its first-ever Fleet Release Clearance (FRC) which has been issued by the the Centre for Military Airworthiness and Certification (CEMILAC).

●BrahMos is the first indigenous supersonic and advanced ALCM system made in India in a joint venture with Russia which has this certification. This has the proven capabilities for the Indian Air Force.

Why is this BrahMos on Sukhoi-30 MKI certification important?

● “With the FRC, the IAF Squadrons can now use these missiles in combat missions. It must be mentioned that the IAF had earlier this year added unmatched capability when it had inducted the Su-30 MKI which were armed with the BrahMos ALCMs in the resurrected No 222 Squadron at Thanjavur Air Force Station.”

●This has given the IAF more advantage during its missions in the Indian Ocean Region as the BrahMos stand-off distance is around 300 km and the Su-30 MKI is 3000 km, which also has the capability of being refuelled during a mission.

●According to sources, FRC is a critical certification for all who are into missile programmes as based on this can the weapon be used during a mission.

●Before the BrahMos was inducted in the IAF it had successfully demonstrated its land-attack and anti-ship capabilities which were carried out on land-based launchers as well as Su-30MKI.

About International Criminal Court

●It is a permanent judicial body created by the 1998 Rome Statute which entered into force on July 1, 2002.

●It has 123 nations are States Parties to the Rome Statute and recognize the ICC’s authority. The notable exceptions being the US, China, Russia and India.

Jurisdiction
It has jurisdiction over four crimes:

•Genocide
•Crimes against humanity
•War crimes
•The crime of aggression.

●The headquarter of International Criminal Court is in The Hague, Netherlands.

Note:

International Court of Justice V/s International Criminal Court

●The International Court of Justice (ICJ), the ICC is not part of the United Nations system, with the UN-ICC relationship being governed by a separate agreement.

●The International Court of Justice, which is among the UN’s six principal organs, mainly hears disputes between nations.

●The ICC, on the other hand, prosecutes individuals– its authority extending to offences committed in a member state or by a national of such a state.

Global Trends Report :UNHCR

Why in News-The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has released its annual Global Trends report before the World Refugee Day (20th June).

●Global Trends is published every year to count and track the numbers of refugees, internally displaced people, people who have returned to their countries or areas of origin, asylum-seekers, stateless people and other populations of concern to UNHCR.

Key Points

Displacement in 2019:
●Nearly 80 million people were forcibly displaced by the end of 2019 — which is nearly 1% of the global population.Half of those displaced were children.
●Of the 80 million people, 26 million were cross-border refugees, 45.7 million were internally displaced people, 4.2 million were asylum seekers and 3.6 million were Venezuelans displaced abroad.
●More than eight of every 10 refugees (85%) are in developing countries, generally a country neighbouring the one they fled.
●Five countries account for two-thirds of people displaced across borders: Syria, Venezuela, Afghanistan, South Sudan and Myanmar.
●Syria has been the top country of origin for refugees since 2014.

Reason of Displacement:
◆Persecution, conflict, violence, human rights violations or events seriously disturbing public order were the main reasons behind the forced displacement.

◆80% of the world’s displaced people are in countries or territories affected by acute food insecurity and malnutrition – many of them facing climate and other disaster risk.

Way Forward
●The report underlines that forced displacement nowadays is not only vastly more widespread but is simply no longer a short-term and temporary phenomenon. People cannot be expected to live in a state of upheaval for years on end, without a chance of going home, nor a hope of building a future where they are.
●The refugees should be provided asylum, since it is a human right. Countries should not deny asylum based on race, religion, geography etc. In the aftermath of World War II, most countries agreed to protect refugees through the 1951 Refugee Convention.
●There is a need for a fundamentally new and more accepting attitude towards all who flee, coupled with a much more determined drive to end conflicts that go on for years and that are at the root of such immense suffering.

#INTWERVIEW_QUESTION

No one wishes to infringe on your personal space in the SSB Interview. Then why do they ask personal question? Your Personal question will always be asked towards the middle or towards the end of the interview by which time the interviewer is well aware of the scale at which OLQ’s are present in you. Remember, everyone in this world has all OLQ’s (in lesser or greater scale than that required by the SSB). A personal question is used to confirm OLQ’s (in the scale/quantum). The most likely OLQ’s the interviewer wants to scale-up by asking a personal question are Sense of responsibility, Social adaptability, Cooperation, Self-Confidence, Speed of decision (correctness part) and Moral courage etc.

On that note today's INTERVIEW QUESTION IS....
Do you have a girlfriend/boyfriend? If yes, how much time do you spend together and how? Have you kissed? Have you had sex? If don’t have a girlfriend/boyfriend, Why so? Are you gay? Have you tried to have a girlfriend/boyfriend?

Ask yourself as to how you will answer to this question. The answer may differ for different entries. So you need not post the answer as this is a personal one. We are not interested but SSB is. If any doubts you can ask here in group. Otherwise just prepare for it in your personal journal.
