CALL FOR SOLIDARITY FOR COMRADE PAOLO TODDE ON HUNGER STRIKE

The Sardinian comrade Paolo Todde, already hit by repression in the first half of 2000 for the investigation against the old anarchist social club FRARIA in Cagliari, currently in remand with robbery charge since 23 October 2024 and already arrested a few years ago with armed robbery charge, began a hunger strike on 25 April along with other prisoners to protest against the living conditions of the prison in Uta (Sardinia). The intervention of the guarantors with their empty and useless promises caused the interruption of the collective strike after less than a week. Paolo decided to resume it alone on May 8 with the clear intention of carrying it to the bitter end. We specify that Paolo is over sixty years old and started the hunger strike with a body weight of only 61 kg. Paolo shares with us a thousand dream: a free Sardinia, the hatred against jails and the society that produces them and has never been indifferent to the colonial occupation forces’violence and prevarications. To silence or to eliminate him for the State is a warning for those who fight against the system and for all prisoners who rebel inside prisons. For that reason he’s subject to provocations and infamies by the prison guards, such as the arbitrary block of correspondence and of the entry of money. They don’t allow him to make video calls with the excuse that there is no line, they bring him with great delay to the talks and drop his books, his letters and everything that can be ruined in the buckets where he washes clothes. All these violences add up to the situation that all the prisoners live and that Paolo’s reporting since months. In fact, in Uta, water is not potable, it can’t be used even for cooking after the administration has mixed it with chlorine to eliminate the serious pollution from fecal colibacteria that makes it unsuitable also for personal hygiene. The always overcrowded cells (140 more prisoners than the maximum capacity of the jail are locked up there) are closed 22 hours a day. Access to the library and the soccer field are limited. Summer temperatures in southern Sardinia often reach 43 degrees. There is no healthcare and the prison police are constantly provoking prisoners and their families, and doing beatings against pridoners. This kind of life is unbearable for any human being, and is even more umbearable for those who in their entire lives have never bent their heads and have always fight in solidarity with the enemies of the system starting from the Committee of Solidarity with the Sardinian Proletariat Prisoner Deported. Paolo, like the revolutionary anarchist Alfredo Cospito, has decided to use his body as a barricade, starting, risking his own life, an immense struggle that can only achieve results if we are able to lead, with the same determination, a mobilization of revolutionary and international solidarity. We reaffirm our solidarity and our commitment to extend the struggle so that the administration have no peace. We remind that officials, the penitentiary police and the various guardians of the prisoners are co-responsible for the current situation and that the oppressed people have a long memory. If something will happen to Paolo, they must assume all consequences. Let’s not leave Paolo alone in this struggle.

Anyone who’d like to write to him can write at the following address:

Irish rap trio Kneecap have said the charging of one of their members with a terror offence in the UK is “political policing” and a “carnival of distraction”.

Liam Óg Ó hAnnaidh, who performs under the stage name Mo Chara, was charged under the name Liam O’Hanna over the alleged displaying of a flag in support of Hizbullah at a gig at the O2 Forum in Kentish Town, north London, on November 21st last year.

A rap band from west Belfast who perform mostly in Irish, Kneecap are Mo Chara, DJ Próvai and Móglaí Bap – real names Liam Óg Ó hAnnaidh, JJ Ó Dochartaigh and Naoise Ó Cairealláin respectively.

In a statement on X, the group said: “14,000 babies are about to die of starvation in Gaza, with food sent by the world sitting on the other side of a wall, and once again the British establishment is focused on us."

With the benefit of four decades' distance, we can see how fortunate we were to inherit the militant and exuberant counterculture that Colin and his comrades helped to build.

You can hear the music that Conflict recorded here:

But for the full experience, you have to go to a punk show, bring home a Conflict LP, put it on the turntable, and read the lyrics while contemplating what kind of trouble to get into.

Better still, you should form a punk band yourself.
