Calendars are a complex subject. Here is the simple version. Before 700 BC everyone had a 360 day calendar with 12 months of exactly 30 days. The lunar year (the moon year) and the solar year were the same length. About 700 BC a catastrophe in the heavens witnessed by the entire globe (described as two gods fighting) created havoc in the solar system, leaving the solar year 365.25 days long and the lunar month 29.5 days long. Since then mankind has wracked their brains trying to devise calendars which force some kind of order upon the chaos. These calendar efforts are of two main kinds. Solar calendars which add 5 days to the year plus a leap day ever 4 years. Lunar calendars which run with 12 lunar months (alternating between 29 and 30 day months) and then add a 30-day month as needed to catch back up. The Essene calendar is a unique solar calendar which makes the adjustment by adding 4 days every year and a leap week every 5 to 6 years. This allowed the feasts to always fall on the same day of the week.

The turning back of the sundial in Hezekiah's day was associated with the cosmic event. Some have opined that the sundial was not a daily sundial, but the 720-step sundial, which measured half-days on a 360-day annual sundial. If this was the case, then when the sundial went back 10 degrees, it went back five days.
