❗️US denies Mahmoud Abbas visa for second straight year
The US has denied Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas an entry visa to attend next week’s UN General Assembly in New York, extending a ban that has been in place since last year, a Palestinian official familiar with the matter told Reuters on Thursday.
The State Department said on Wednesday, without identifying specific officials, that it would extend visa sanctions against Palestinian officials over actions taken to "internationalize the Israeli-Palestinian conflict," including pursuing cases against Israel before international tribunals.
The decision marks the second consecutive year that US President Donald Trump's administration has barred Abbas from addressing the gathering of world leaders in person. At last year’s meeting, several US allies recognized Palestine as a state.
The 193-member UN General Assembly is scheduled to vote later Thursday on whether to allow Abbas to submit a video statement for next week’s annual gathering. Abbas delivered his address to the General Assembly’s high-level meeting by video last September.
The Palestinian Authority's foreign ministry said in a statement that the measure runs counter to "developing Palestinian-US relations and creating the political climate necessary to implement the two-state solution and achieve peace and stability in the region."

The downing of a Saudi F-15SA by a Barq-1/2 or similar AD-08 Majid missile highlights a critical failure in the jet's AN/AAR-57 CMWS. Despite six UV sensors designed to detect solid-fuel rocket plumes from tens of kilometers, the crew took no countermeasures after launch from the lower hemisphere.
This suggests either system malfunction or a significant "dead zone" in sensor coverage below the aircraft. A similar incident occurred in March when an Iranian SAM approached an F-35A from the lower hemisphere undetected by its AN/AAQ-37 DAS.
Previously, Houthi forces shot down a Saudi F-15SA using an improvised SAM equipped with R-27ET missiles.

The US Department of Justice has charged five alleged members of a network linked to Russian intelligence services, which is said to have recruited people in the US to carry out surveillance and commit murders.
According to the indictment, this network recruited a Venezuelan citizen living in the US last summer to surveil a well-known Russian dissident in the Washington area. He was offered $1,000 to $1,500 for surveillance and $40,000 for murder. When the recruit refused to carry out the murder himself, the alleged recruiters asked whether he knew anyone who could do it.
The indictment also alleges that the network had earlier offered a US citizen $25,000 to murder another Russian dissident in Lithuania, and that plans were discussed for attacks on power substations, warehouses, fuel storage facilities, and other infrastructure sites in NATO countries supporting Ukraine.
The five defendants include a former colonel of Russian intelligence, an alleged FSB officer, and individuals residing in Russia. All of them remain at large.
The charges are merely allegations, and the defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.

According to the newspaper, Washington wants to show Moscow the seriousness of its intentions to restart relations and create additional incentives for the Russian elite to end the war. The specific deals being considered are currently unknown.
This approach differs from Trump's previous position, who stated that deals with Russia were only possible after the end of the war, the NYT notes.
The newspaper claims that during a recent meeting in the Kremlin, Putin told Witcoff and Kushner that Russia would seize all of Donbas within a few months and would be able to inflict heavy blows on Ukrainian energy infrastructure. Kushner responded by reminding Putin that he had said the same thing a year ago: "What are the chances that we'll come back here in a year and you'll say the same thing again? Maybe we shouldn't waste a year?"
The publication also reminds readers that Congress has passed a bill on "hellish" sanctions against Russia.
"But if the Trump administration is taking a carrot-and-stick approach to Putin, it appears that the emphasis is on the carrot," the article states.
