Multiple US outlets report that a Pentagon briefing to congressional staff directly contradicted the White House’s claim of an imminent Iranian preemptive strike.

On Saturday, the White House said U.S. strikes on Iran were based on intelligence showing Tehran preparing missile attacks on American bases that could cause mass casualties.

But on Sunday, Pentagon officials told bipartisan congressional staff there was no immediate threat from Iran unless first provoked by Israel, and no plans for unprovoked attacks on U.S. forces.

They acknowledged Iran’s long-standing missile and proxy capabilities, but made clear that this did not amount to the kind of imminent threat the White House cited to justify preemptive action.
