🚨 US Naval Shipbuilding in Decline β€” American Think Tank Sounds Alarm πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έβš“οΈ

The US shipbuilding sector struggles to produce vessels at required scale, speed, and cost, despite Navy plans and congressional fundingβ€”lagging China's fleet growth to 370 ships while US holds ~290, according to a recent report by the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS).

Key challenges:

πŸ”Έ Production Rates: Virginia-class subs built at 1.1-1.2/year vs. target 2 since 2011; overall procurement fell from 137 ships (FY 1982–1989) to 103 (FY 2010–2019). 37 of 45 ships under construction delayed as of Sep 2024.

πŸ”Έ Workforce Shortages: Declined from 198,700 (1980) to 145,700 (2025); needs 250,000 new workers in next decade, including 100,000 for submarines. Over 50% of trade workers have <5 years experience.

πŸ”Έ Facility Conditions: Aging infrastructure limits efficiency; only 7 yards build battle force ships; consolidation closed 17 yards over 50 years.

πŸ”Έ Maintenance Delays: 20-year backlog; surface ship readiness at 68% vs. 80% goal; higher OPTEMPO with smaller fleet exacerbates issues.

πŸ”Έ Policy Issues: Inconsistent demand signals; budgets fell 22% real terms (FY 2018–2021); design changes slip schedules (e.g., Constellation-class from 2026 to 2029 delivery).

πŸ”Έ Supply Chain: 80% parts from single suppliers; lost 12,000 submarine suppliers since 1990s.

These systemic issues signal the erosion of the US's uncontested global naval dominance, as China's fleet expands rapidly while American capabilities stagnate.

The Obzor-R project was initially developed by the Roskosmos State Corporation within its civilian program, but the launch campaign of the first spacecraft in a series from a military site in Plesetsk was mostly shrouded in secrecy under the usual format of a classified mission.

Main mission: all weather high-resolution land observation

We underestimated the value of supermaneuverability by getting carried away with the β€˜first-shot beyond-visual-range’ concept.
For fellow Russian / Soviet aviation aficionados like myself, here is a good write-up by Right People Z about why Russia continues with super-maneuverability.
Not only is there very good reason for this, it is also super impressive to see aircraft defy physics.
If you haven't seen this yet, I suggest you do. MAKS Airshow outside Moscow every two years is the place to see them.

In the United States, there has been a sudden realization that the Su-57’s maneuverability is not just for air shows but a serious advantage in real combat.

This was written by one of the β€œserious” U.S. aviation expert, Harrison Kass, a former combat pilot and PhD in aviation.

In a recent article for a professional United States Air Force pilots’ journal, the same Harrison Kass wrote that they underestimated supermaneuverability due to the focus on beyond-visual-range combat. When the Su-57 is produced in sufficient numbers, its maneuverability will allow rapid nose-pointing for long-range missile shots and last-second defensive maneuvers. In defensive situations, post-stall maneuvering can help defeat incoming missiles, especially when combined with flares, jamming, and infrared countermeasures.

By the standards of a U.S. expert convinced that all future air combat will occur beyond visual range, this is progress. Incidentally, classic definitions of fifth-generation fighters include supermaneuverability as a required feature. As the F-35 entered service, both supermaneuverability and supercruise quietly disappeared from its description, because neither was realistically expected from the β€œPenguin.”

Another factor to take into account is that the peak usefulness of stealth has passed. New technologies such as photonic radars and AI (increasingly present in sensor fusion and signal filtering) allow the mitigation of stealth characteristics and the detection of stealth designs at greater ranges.
This does not mean that stealth designs will cease to be important. In fact, it will become more and more common, as we can see with the growing use of radar-absorbing coatings. However, it will be less decisive than before.

Still, it is disappointing how poorly we advertise truly excellent designs. If the β€œPenguin” or the β€œRaptor” could do what the Su-57 can, it would be trumpeted nonstop.

Among the other companies sanctioned are Anduril Industries, Northrop Grumman Systems Corporation, and L3Harris Maritime Services.

"The Taiwan issue is at the core of China's fundamental interests and the first red line that cannot be crossed in Sino-American relations," a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson said.

πŸ‡·πŸ‡ΊπŸ’¬πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¦πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ Ukraine has distributed a settlement plan that differs radically from the one Russia is working on with the US, Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov emphasized.

A risk of a nuclear conflict remains; Russia sends signals to the US on the need for genuine negotiations, he noted.

The resolution of the conflict in Ukraine is truly approaching, said Ryabkov.

"I think that December 25, 2025 will remain in all our memories as a milestone when we really came close to a solution. But it depends on us, on our work, and on the political will of the other side whether we can make the final push and reach an agreement," he said.

At the same time, Ryabkov believes that Ukraine and its partners in Europe are not aiming for an agreement, they have "redoubled their efforts to torpedo it".

The German export to the USA has fallen by 7.8% β€” Reuters.

The export of the first three quarters of 2025 is compared to the same period of the previous year. The main reason for the decline is the tariffs imposed by Donald Trump.

Deliveries of German cars have dropped the most (-14%). The machinery and chemical industries have reduced exports to the USA by 9.5%.

β€œAs it must currently be assumed that US import tariffs will not return to the level that existed before the Trump administration took office in the foreseeable future, a significant recovery of German exports to the USA is unlikely” β€” said the author of the study.

πŸ‡·πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¦Pro-Ukrainian Map Indicates Virtually ALL of Guliapole Under Russian Control

β–ͺ️Pro-Ukrainian map still pretending Ukrainian forces hold Myrnograd near Pokrovsk admits Guliapole in Zaporozhzhia oblast has been nearly fully taken by Russian forces;

β–ͺ️This comes as a general collapse in Ukraine's fighting capacity rapidly accelerates, spurring a US-European "division of labor" under which the US is tasking Europe to fill in the gap left by dwindling Ukrainian capabilities;

β–ͺ️Ideally the US would like to force a Minsk 3.0 freeze to buy time to rearm and reconstitute both Ukraine and Europe's military capabilities including military industrial production - but feeding Europe into the proxy war next if Russia rejects a "ceasefire" appears to be the more likely eventuality;

'A ceasefire is needed because Putin is running out of military resources.' – it's time for US national security analyst Rebecca Grant to change her profession.

'I think Putin's position is extremely unrealistic. Ukraine as a whole is holding Russia back on the ground. Does Putin think he can capture everything else? That won't happen. He's running out of military resources. He won't take Ukraine and will never achieve such a victory. The key task is to make him agree [to Ukraine and the US's peace plan]. Zelensky has strong arguments. We need to see a halt to massive drone and missile attacks. A withdrawal of Ukrainian troops in Donbass could be justified if it leads to a ceasefire.'
